A cell phone is often the only way that a poor or homeless person can get a job. How do you leave a phone number for an employer when you live in your car, or at a shelter? And how many minutes do they get? It's probably minimal, I'd bet.

Seriously, what's wrong with you people?
What's wrong? They are nickel and diming me to death! I can't afford any more of this. I'll pay for a safety net but that's about it. I can't afford to increase their standard of living beyond a subsistence level.

YES! IT MUST STOP!

It's taking $$$ that could be better used awarding NO-bid, NO oversight contracts to companies like Halliburton and Blackwater.

Stop ALL aid to individual Americans, it's too intrusive on corporate welfare programs.

Regarding Food Stamps - that is a state run program.

Edit: Please answer this if you want your claim to have some credibility. I can post links to the very same cell phone service from previous years.

Here is one for Tennessee that offers 68 minutes. It gives people the chance to call their doctors or the schools if they have children. (notice the date is Aug 2008?)

Free cell phones offered to poor Tenn. residents - International Business Times -
Any cell phone that is in working condition doesn't need a service provider to call 911. Just a tidbit of interesting info I thought I would add to the conversation. And you are correct about the program being offered in the past, I believe.

I do believe that it is wrong to offer free cell phones and service to welfare recipients. However, I also agree that this can't be pinned on President Obama. I think if we on the right want to maintain credibility we shouldn't make inaccurate claims.

Typical Obama type thuggery. Community organizing - give enough to the "downtrodden" to make them beholden to you, make them feel cared for - that marxist equivalent of a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Whenever the government "gives" anyone something, someone always pays and pays dearly.
We're on the verge of "paying" by a loss of the most basic freedoms.

There is nothing wrong with giving the poor a free basic phone. I thought the idea was to get people OFF being poor. You cannot find a job without a phone. And you cannot call 911 without a phone. It should just be a basic phone- nothing fancy.

This program probably cost about $10 a month at MOST for each person on it considering that the government buys the service at a bulk price. Even if 2 million people are on it, that is $20 million which is NOTHING to the government. It is probably about 2 hours of the war in Iraq. And the benefits of the program are many. A phone is a lifeline to a job or to 911.

Voluntary charity is a blessing.
Compulsory charity is a curse.

Robbing St Peter to pay St Paul is not moral, nor evidence of a higher social conscience. It is merely theft, by force of government.

Socialism = piracy

Too bad this typical Obama type thuggery began before he was in office. So what type of thuggery was it then?
