Wisconsin Jeff Fitzgerald: Dems Still in Contempt – Can’t Vote in Committee

March 15, 2011
By Maggie 3 comments
Wisconsin State Senate Majority Leader, Senator Jeff Fitzgerald has notified the Republican Caucus that all 14 Democrat Senators who fled the state to avoid voting on issues they opposed are still in “contempt of the Senate” and their votes in Standing Committees will be NOT be counted or recorded:

Jeff Fitzgerald

Subject: Senate Democrat voting privileges in standing committees
Dear Members,
With the return of the Senate Democrats this weekend, questions have arisen regarding Democrat members’ participation in Senate standing committee public hearings and executive sessions.
Please note that all 14 Democrat senators are still in contempt of the Senate. Therefore, when taking roll call votes on amendments and bills during executive sessions, Senate Democrats’ votes will not be reflected in the Records of Committee Proceedings or the Senate Journal. They are free to attend hearings, listen to testimony, debate legislation, introduce amendments, and cast votes to signal their support/opposition, but those votes will not count, and will not be recorded.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact my office.
Thank you,
Scott Fitzgerald
Senate Majority Leader
13th Senate District

Why would you be pissed off? Supreme Court has upheld the right to punish elected officials while they are in contempt..

See McGrain v. Daugherty

Care to inform us just how they are in contempt?

And before you try, no, the Republicans saying that they are in contempt doesn't make them in contempt

You are right.. just because Republicans say they are in contempt doesnt make it so.. But the ELECTED officials who voted on them being in contempt actually does.. The fact that no Democrats were present to vote against the contempt isnt the fault of the Republican members who were there..

Just more desperation from the right as they know their days are numbered and going to be recalled soon.

Well, I hope Wisconsin stops collecting state taxes until this matter is settled.

No taxation without representation.

If the people will not be represented, they should pay no taxes.

Tyranny is usually emboldened by what it perceives as a victory. The idea behind this is not to punish anyone for the actions they may have committed. It is to deter others from challenging the rule of authority. It is structurally similar to the medieval practice of staking the decapitated head of one's enemies at the city gate.

Tough noogies, too bad. They didn't want to be a part of the democratic process for weeks, now all of a sudden they feel like they should actually represent their constituents and earn the salaries they get paid?

Someone needs to inform these POS that there are consequences for their actions; if I lived in WI I would do everything I could to permanently ban them from office. They are garbage.

BZZZ fail again..

a phrase, generally attributed to James Otis about 1761, that reflected the resentment of American colonists at being taxed by a British Parliament to which they elected no representatives and became an anti-British slogan before the American Revolution; in full, “Taxation without representation is tyranny.”

There are ELECTED representatives.. They are just refusing to do their job...
