It's racist in the court of public opinion, so that is all that matters.

well you probably should have because U-T is pretty ****ing cryptic. I got it eventually, and was proud of myself, but it's far from obvious.

Who?

I'm saying that I'm black.

And as for that "court of public opinion" statement, an internet forum does not speak for an entire country, let alone a race of people.

Just say the words 'Uncle Tom' in a convo with a black person. I'd be willing to bet there would be little reaction to it, if any. Maybe a chuckle and someone saying "what do you know about Uncle Toms?" and they'll go on. But nothing will happen.

I guess you're right. Using it generically may not be racist. Just calling someone a U-T is.

That can be said for ANY words or phrases. It doesn't have to be racist and Uncle Tom, generally, isn't. Seriously, I don't understand the fear of using it.

As some others have pointed out, thinking that this action by Cain would cause him to be called an Uncle Tom by blacks proves you have no clue what the term even means.

I don't see the term, "Uncle Tom", as racist at all. I see it as an insult blacks throw at other blacks they deem having gone over to the other side--whatever "the other side" represents to them.

I do agree that there's also a very self deprecating tone to the U-T term, much the same as the N word.

Um a poll on City-Data's Politics and Other Controversies forum is not the court of public. lol. Most of the people that voted in the poll didn't understand the definition of Uncle Tom. You still don't understand the definition of Uncle Tom. I see the same strawman argument being throw around everytime Cain is mentioned. I will repeat. An uncle tom is not a successful black man that happens to be a conservative. An uncle tom is not an intelligent black man. An uncle tom is someone that would sell his race out to another to just to make himself look better to that race.
