A lot of the times it is much harder to get a job if you spent several years in the Military and have had no prior experience doing something else. Some companies won't even call you for an interview because it is harder to check for references.

I've gone through that...My soon to be husband is going through that. He's only had one job besides his 10 years in the Army and companies won't even call when he applies...even when the job's description is exactly what he did in the Army for 10 years.

Not only that, but some employers won't hire veterans because of reserve duty. Most veterans must serve reserve duty which may include being called up for active duty and by federal law, these employers cannot fire or permanently replace the employee because of time missed for military duty. To get around the law, some employers refuse to hire veterans. Not as an official policy, sort of like the way a racist boss throws away a black man's job application.
