And if it's a mere store policy that's just fine. Codifying a standard like that by statute changes the system, and starts to raise other legal and constitutional issues.

Apparently you haven't seen some of these games lately?

As someone that has worked in the movie rental and in the electronics sales industries (give you a hint...they both began with B's) I don't tihnk it's right to rent/sell R rated movies or MA games to minors.

If you can't go see it in the theater then you shouldn't be allowed to rent/buy it in a store.

JMHO.

Also, if there are no laws allowing the rent/purchase to a minor it must be the company policy then that doesn't allow it.

Of course. but a lot of times, kids will do it even if their parents don't give approval (i.e., go to a friend's house). So the law is kind of meaningless, the kids will just get it elsewhere or their parents will just go buy it for them for Christmas.
I agree with you there. But if I am owner of store X, I'm not going to openly contribute to the deliquency of a minor. You are correct...they WILL find a way to see/play those games but I'm not going to make it easy.

They have to decide if it's worth the trouble.

If the parents are buying it for their kids...shame on them for not doing their research to see what their kids are playing.

As someone who played DOOM at the age of 6 and Resident Evil at the age of 8, what exactly is wrong with this?

I've a friend who works at Blockbuster There is no actual law preventing the rental or purchase of anything (movie or video game) to a minor with the exception of porn. It's all company policy because they don't want their pants sued off by a parent whose kid rented something like DNF.

There are movie theaters that don't ID teens for rated "R" movies. I know, because I've been seeing them since I was 14. Without an adult.

How lovely that this is "entertainment" in American society. (Well, not in my house it isn't.)
I'm an honest law-abiding, hardworking, tax-paying American citizen... If I want to play shoot 'em up military games like Call of Duty or urban crime games like Grand Theft Auto IV or LA Noire to relax when I get home from 11 hours of work, that's my right. If I had kids I'd be monitoring and controlling what games they played until I felt they were old enough to play those types of games.

As for you...

I wonder if any of the Supremes actually watched the games they ruled on? Some of these games are brutal.

So, it's ok to sell/rent violent video games to minors, but people under the age of 17 aren't allowed to go to an R rated movie without a parent?

I am a gamer myself...there are some games that I play that include the same amount (a lot of times MORE) violence, offensive language, and depictions of sex/drug use as R rated movies.

My question is this...why is it ok for kids to play these games?
You can take a 3 year old to see a R rated movie, there is no national standard for not letting children see violence.

I let my son watch R rated movies and play Mortal Kombat with me. But I did the same stuff growing up, I feel fine. He'll be exposed to it sooner or later. I do not let my son watch sex or nudity though.
