I'm not sure that I'd call them a scam, but I would call most of them a rip-off. They're like make-believe colleges.
I agree with this.
True Story: I recently encountered a guy here in the Middle East who was exquisitely proud to be a recent grad in Information Technology. After being a manual labor worker his entire working life, this was a big step for him. I figured he'd earned a Bachelors, or maybe even a Masters in IT. Later in the conversation I found out it was actually an Associates Degree in IT......no problem with that....except it was from ITT Technical Institute and it cost him $45,000!!!
Rip-off indeed. Truthfully...I felt bad for the guy. How does one get snookered into something like that? A community college would have cost him about 1/10th of that for the same degree!
And we have John Boehner to thank for this and the likes of I.T.T Technical Institute.....who's credits will not transfer in the vast majority of cases.
Just ask the grads with no jobs and a lifetime of debt.
+1....
Anyways, the only for profit that I wouldn't consider to be a complete rip-off is Devry because it has regional accreditation and a few of their programs have certification from professional organizations for the specific field. It also isn't that expensive compared to other private institutions for a bachelor's degree.
