If the government defaults, many students would have to leave school because the government would stop giving loans and grants. Do Republicans care?
As Judge Smails famously said, "The world needs ditch diggers too".
On a more serious note, it's unfortunate that many may not be able to finish college, but there simply isn't enough money to go around for the govt to be all things to all people. Politicians of all stripes have over-promised for generations and our day of reckoning is coming. The sooner everyone comes to grips with reality the better off we will be.

The thing is, there is plenty of money. We just can't figure out how to stop wasting it! Money spent on educating Americans wanting to be educated is never, in my book, a waste of money. That is what I would categorize as an investment in our future and should be a priority.
I got a job and paid for it. I suppose others could do the same.
A number of my friends joined the military, where they got a terrific education. The military paid for them to go to college. Also many corporations will do the same. Where there is a will, there's a way.

To be fair, I got married, and my wife worked while I worked full time and went to school. When I graduated, we had zero debt and then she quit working to have babies. We were smart and we planned ahead.

No, there is not. Especially when the deficit runs in excess of $1 trillion annually. I agree that lots of money is wasted, but not anywhere near enough waste can/will be found that can make up the shortfall we are talking about.
To help you understand the size of these deficits, do you realize that one trillion seconds is approximately 31,700 years? The cold, hard reality is that austerity measures must be taken now. Yes, it's going to suck and lots of people are going to get hurt. If not now, when? The problem only gets worse as time goes on.
