Who cares if it costs more and isn't a deterrent? I won't argue the point.
Society has a right to rid itself of cold blooded murderers... and I don't mean putting them in prison to hang out with their homeboys.

I consider the death penalty easier than life in prison. If I committed a heinous crime, give me lethal injection any day over a lifetime in a tiny cell being beaten and raped.

In most countries, you can be executed for far more than murder. China has the longest list of executable offenses. Up until this year, tax fraud was a capital offense. They still execute people for drugs, rape, smuggling, corruption, affiliation with a gang, arson, counterfeiting money, etc. And obviously in places like Iran, being gay is sufficient to get you executed. Of course, I'm sure many here might be fine with that one.

The murderers want to live...which is why virtually all of them keep trying for stays right up until the last second. Someone like Gary Gilmore is an exception..
So, why should we give killers such as those in the Petit case in Connecticut what they want? They sure as heck didn't care about their victims when they sexually abused, tortured and then lit on fire Dr. Petit's wife and daughters.
Why should we give the kind of human scum that would commit such a horrific crime anything at all outside of a needle?

Because 2 wrongs don't make a right. Just because they are uncompassionate barbarians doesn't mean we have to resort to their level just to feel some sense of fleeting justice. They will probably be killed in prison anyway, and it's much cheaper.

I was referring to the United States, not "other countries."
I'd be willing to forego the DP if we had true LWOP. Three bland meals and 24 hours a day in a stark, plain cell for the entire sentence and I would accept no DP. Perhaps I would accept allowing them to do hard labor.
Unfortunately, thug huggers would cry that LWOP is too cruel and then Life with parole is cruel, then 30 years is too cruel, then 5 year is too cruel, until we end up giving killers a stern talking to and send them on their way.
Bottom line, some people are completely unredeemable, evil sociopaths and need to be removed from the gene pool.
