Ppl are quite confused about the differences between race, nationality, ethnicity.
Eg1. Barack Obama
Race: fluid subjective concept. In America for eg where the one drop rule applies his race is black. In many other countries he would be considered and treated as mixed race which he in fact is.
Ethnicity: This is a tricky concept in his case. He does not neatly fit into the African American ethnicity as this implies a sub culture spanning centuries in the US with its own unique traditions and history. His wife would fit neatly into that ethnicity though.
Nationality: American.
Eg2
Jennifer Lopez
Race: Multi racial. No Latino is not a race. It is an amalgamation of Native American, white, black in varying degrees.
Ethnicity: Hispanic American. This is a catch all meaningless blanket term that is used to group all people of Spanish speaking ancestry in the US. Hispanics can be any race....even gasp Mongoloid!!
Nationality: Puerto Rican/American.
How many whites call themselves European American? Seems like you should already have dropped African American.
Whites don't need to call themselves European American. They know their countries of origin. They also don't come from a culture that was created in America.
After reading innumerable threads and comments regarding racial self-identification, lack of assimilation, and screeds about multiculturalism I thought to myself why is it that I've never read a thread or comment advocating the ending of the classification referred to as white? I mean if African American is so offensive because of its alleged inaccuracy then why not do a way with the term white, after all, white people are exactly white or anything close to it. So, in the hopes of bringing about that much touted color blind society, I would like to make the following offer.
Do away with the idea or whiteness and I will stop identifying myself as an African American and ask others to do the same.
What do you think?
You can call yourself whatever you want. Call yourself spumoni I don't care.
What people need to do is drop references to themselves as being a race, because it's a man made fallacy used to categorize humans in an arbitrary unscientific way. It's not relevant or useful for anything. Except putting people in stereotypical boxes.
We need to start the push for anthropology to be taught in schools I think between the 10th and 12th grades would be sufficient. If they can teach about homosexuals in school they can certainly give these kids an education in something that will actually be useful to them in real life.

white = race, typically used on forms which require race or identifying a suspect to distinguish from other races..though caucasion is the correct response
African american = ethnicity/nationality, its equivalent would be hungarian american or german american, a term which hardly anyone uses. nothing to do with race.
American, is a comprehensive term used by all ethnicities to describe their nationality and embrace a untiy with all others declared to be Americans.
Hmmmm, I see your point every St Patricks Day, but hey any excuse is as good as another to tip a pint, or two.
