Glock - I was diagnosed with cancer a month after my 23rd birthday. While I was lucky to have found a job after graduating from a top university debt free that offered health insurance (most jobs I applied to did not), many are not so lucky. Insurance doesn't cover everything - I still have 5 figures of medical debt not to mention all the costs of being your own caretaker. If I relapse, I will not be able to pursue future treatment because I will not be able to afford to keep a roof over my head in the 6+ months of hospitalization.

That's not because of my poor choices - that's because at my age, I did not have time to save money. All the I saved went to putting myself through college, and then moving across the country to find a job. Those were the responsible things to do.

I've spent time on the Isle of Skye. You can't compare your community to almost anywhere else. I live in a major city that I moved to 4 months before getting sick. There was no community to back me up and my [small] family was not in a position help either.

The point is - not everyone is poor because of bad choices. I have made a series of fantastic choices in my life. I continue to do so, even though my body is rallying against me. Now my choices are dictated by my ability to access healthcare - not something you could ever relate to in the UK. The career path I trained for is closed to me. My ability to start my own business is closed to me.

If I groveled to the level of Hawkeye (the OP) and started selling drugs, I'd be in a hell of a better position right now, frankly.

The taxpayers in the US provide plenty of safety nets for the poor, sick and handicapped. They also donate, by far, more to charity than any other country on earth. If not for the hardworking, successful and wealthy among us this could not happen. I am not in the 1% but am still striving to get there. I am a 53%er that pays tax.
It is laughable that all of you libs can't even believe that anyone could get wealthy from hard work!

Of course not. I didn't say it would.

But it would go a long way in helping people deal with situations put before them.

It is laughable that some of you don't understand that speaking about luck and happenstance (or selling drugs) is somehow equal to disbelief of hard work ending in wealth.

1. Making insurance affordable to all.
2. Getting rid of multi-million dollar payouts on malpractice lawsuits.
3. Enacting programs to get more doctors in our nation. It is very expensive to become a doctor, let alone a specialist. We need to make sure our citizens have access to quality doctors all over the country. One way to do this is loan forgiveness for doctors agreeing to spend time in disenfranchised parts of the country.

Those are just off the top of my head. I'm sure someone more intelligent than me would be able to better word it than I have.

LOL I don't know. Like I said, I'm sure someone that knows what they are talking about could come up with a solution. My thinking is that if more people could afford insurance, we wouldn't have such high healthcare costs that happen from the uninsured.

How about we let anyone who wants to sign p for a gvmt plan where they pay say $80-100 a month for single and $180-200 for family. If ya get sick ya get taken care of at a VA hospital. If ya have a cold or need a physical ya pay ya doc cash.
Drs get trained a VA hospitals at no cost, and have to work there for say $50k for 5 yrs after graduation
