The 1950s. I like the clothes, family centered society and the "conservatism" of that time period.
The 1920s prosperity was mostly among the wealthy and at the same time, the gap between the rich and the poor was growing rapidly. The 1950s economic growth was mostly among the middle class and among lower class families. So the gap between the rich and the poor was at its minimal.
Socially, they were different. The 1920s were a time of rapid social changes and a liberation. A lot of people smoked, partied and were wild. People were delaying marriage and having fewer children. While the 1950s were more modest and conservative.
I think about this from time to time. However, "prosperity" is a criteria that has a very low weight on my ranking system. It's pretty much an afterthought to me, as I see almost no inherent value in it. If a given society is/was prosperous, I would consider that a nice little ancillary benefit perhaps. If not, oh well, I think there are far more important things in life. I don't believe there exists any moral component whatsoever in the concept of "prosperity," and that is my high weight criteria.
Between [nineteen] twenties and fifties, I don't think I have an opinion on that. I can't really think of anything offhand which I would consider a defining characteristic which appeals to me regarding either one of those decades. I could go with either one with the flip of a coin, as I can think of some more preferential, and less preferential, things about each decade.
I frequently wish I was born a decade and half or two decades earlier so I could have been more a part of the microcomputer, coding theory, and digital communications revolution. That was closer to a "golden era" for those particular fields.
By far, I'd prefer the eighteenth or nineteenth century. I find the homesteading and westward expansion lifestyle far more preferable to what exists now.
If you were Black, living in either of these times would be a nightmare.
1920's they would lynch you and have a party, 1950's they bomb your church or spray you down with a high pressure hose. If we take out race and pretend we are an observer I think the 20's would be an interesting time. Being mixed race I would want to avoid those periods in America though. I'm fine in the now.
