According to Wikipedia, "The most popular melody for the Hanukkah hymn has been identified by Birnbaum as an adaptation from the old German folk-song "So weiss ich eins, dass mich erfreut, das pluemlein auff preiter heyde," given in Böhme's "Altdeutsches Liederbuch" (No. 635); it was widely spread among German Jews as early as 1450. By an interesting coincidence, this folk-melody was also the first utilized by Luther for his German chorales. He set it to his "Nun freut euch lieben Christen gmein".
At this point I think it's only a bunch of people, both left and right, who miss the good old days of waring over a topic so completely void of substance, with absolutely no brain cells required, who give a hoot.
Why is a gov't school teaching students to play religious music, with or without words?
Because some of the greatest music classics are religious music. My son's music teacher didn't have any problems teaching the students religious music. It was a public high school and nothing was said or if it was, it didn't go anywhere. When ALL religious music or literature are cut out, the schools are cheating students in many areas of education.
I wish an experiment could be done to see how life would be if all religious references in our country were taken away. The silence would be deafening.
