Twenty years later, with kids and a mortgage and a much higher income, I had no money and too many bills. Now the kids are grown, my income is up there, and we afford two homes much more easily than we afforded apartment rent in the early days.

Just don't use labels to pretend like I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth and am not paying my fair share.
It is amazing how hard work can get us comfortable. I too own two homes and was brought up poor and no family help or money along the way. I learned early the value of a dollar and still spend with thought behind each purchase.

It was difficult in the early years and sometimes I could have only five dollars and see ten ways to spend it. I learned to budget even when the paycheck grew and lived beneath my means.I always kept a car till it got old but kept it clean and people thought they were fairly new. When I got some savings together I always paid cash because I hate to pay interest on anything.

Amusing, is there no working class in the USA ?
Old money is one generation ?
What is so called upper middle class in the USA, I know that upper class in UK is the aristocracy, is upper middle class aristocracy based on income ?

Must mention to my wife that her degree from Oxbridge raises her so called class standing

Total combined household income last year; 108,000.

This year probably 105,000.

We're in sales.

Carpenter here, used to be middle class but for the last 3 years very lower class. but my home is about paid for with a mortgage cheaper than any rent mainly because no public service employees unions around here sucking every penney of property tax they can get their greedy hands on. That helps alot. baking bread tonite, helps heat the house a bit, qualify for nothing, white male with assets. no problem though will do fine if I can work at least a week a month, self employed so no UB for me,ok with me dont need free money.spoils you finding work is more rewarding.
