It's simply unhealthy. You could call it undignified if you really wanted to. My grandma, who unfortunately has paid for it healthwise, would put over a half of stick of butter in spaghetti.........Spaghetti......She lives in WA now, but was born and raised in Mississippi.

My mother and all her siblings were raised in the South, as was my grandmother....they never did anything remotely similar.
Maybe a sub-regional thing?
