The New Scapegoats of Europe - NYTimes.com

One afternoon in November, Océane Sluijzer, a 13-year-old Belgian Jewish girl, was beaten up after soccer practice by a group of schoolmates. Her tormenters, girls of Moroccan descent, called her a “dirty Jew” and told her to “go back to her own country.”

+

In fact, the real answer lies much closer to home: according to a position-paper by the Brookings Institution, if Muslim communities in Europe felt less marginalization and had more economic opportunities, they would resort less to misdirected violence. Although attacks on Jews are scary and hard to explain away, there is no broad and systematic anti-Jewish sentiment in Europe, neither among Muslims nor among the rest of the population. This is not 1936.

The key to helping Belgians understand the attack on Océane is not to sit down with Benjamin Netanyahu. It is to sit down with the girls who punched her and find out how to make them feel welcome in Belgium.

+

What rot! What sane human being wants to sit down with anti-Semites who beat up thirteen year olds? People who do that sort of thing should not be welcomed in any society. Muslims who find excuses for it should stay in Muslim societies and leave the rest of us alone.

This has to be one of the dumbest articles articles I've ever read.

Heh, anti-semitism is still around in Europe....it's just defended as merely being in reaction to the policies of Israel and not that there is a 1000 year history of massacring different people including jews, gypsys, gays and yes...even muslims not so long ago.

I find it really ironic that the Europeans can claim to be all non-racist with bosnia so fresh in the memory....and it took Bill Clinton to force NATO to deal with the situation and Navy Seals to eventually bring the head guy to justice.

It's the New York Times what do you expect? Balanced, intelligent, non-partisian investigative reporting?

Throw the attackers and their families out of the country. Then keep them out.

More reasonably these kids should be treated as violent juvenile criminals and prosecuted as called for by the local, not Sharia, law. If their community objects handle it as any other protest would be. The Muslim immigrants have to be taught that they are under secular law and that is the only law.

If they refuse go back to the first idea.

Actually is a blog associated with the NYT's. Read the top of the page. Its in the global opinion section, and "views from around the world"

BTW, you should really take anything you read in foreign press with a grain of salt, really any press.

Would you be advocating throwing the attackers out of the country if they were not Muslim?

If not, why not?

So should we do the same thing with any hate criminals in the United States? Homosexual hate crimes? Racial hate crimes?

I remember reading a story a while back where some high school kids hung a bunch of black ghosts under a tree in response to a racially motivated killing in their community, should they have all been arrested?

How about we educate children, and don't accept any kind of discrimination on a personal basis? If someone gets hurt physically, then let the authorities handle it like any other violent crime.

Was not that about religion rather than race?

I just love how muslims come from countries that have Sharia to countries that don't and complain that they can not fully practice Sharia, spout anti-semitic and western BS, attack people because of perceived injustices such as freedom of speech and having to live with a 'dirty Jew' - something they probably learned from some Islamic cartoon when they were 5, and then complain that they are discriminated against and need the authorities to carter to them inorder for them to stop their criminal and racist activities.

This is madness - where is Sparta. Pathetic leaders and Islam don't go together. The problem is if not dealt with properly then eventually all of Europe is going to be like Bosnia at a certain point. The problem is that Islam pushes and pushes you to live on their level if you allow them to live in your midst until someone is a looser and someone is a winner. It is just the way that religion rolls.

I think your answer is a good one up to the point where you want to allow the authorities handle violent crime because so often that handling tends to be less that what most of us think fair and good.

Your solution?

Your citation that 'most of us' don't think that the authorities handle violent crime fairly?
