Well actually, that's only because we've been brought up in a capitalist paradigm.
And sometimes, "profits" aren't the best vehicle for spurring innovation, because the "market" will always take the cheap way out.
Take oil for example. One would think the "profit" potential of alternative energy would have weaned us off that sludge a looong time ago.
But no. There's more money in keeping the status quo, so innovation in the arena of energy has been less than stellar.
The "market" will always take the more efficient way out as well, as compared to government projects. We have been brought up with capitalism because capitalism works best to encourage development, innovations, and better products, motivated by profits and achievement. It's no coincidence that the vast majority of innovative products have been born in the U.S.

Of course. But I would submit only in those areas where the "power structure" isn't quite as personally vested as in energy (and increasingly, healthcare access).

By the way, many alternative energies have been tried and failed, i.e. wind. When there is a profit to be made, the market will develop them, as they did with nuclear energy.

Proving, however, that the market doesn't always do what is "best" for humanity. Sometimes profit and what's best aligns, but often, it does not.
Which is certainly preferable than the amoral, uneducated, uncaring "free market."
"Amoral", "uneducated", "uncaring"?????????
So, you are suggesting that we should now govern by consensus?
