Really? Our history ended at the turn of the last century -- nothing of note happened in the 20th century to remember or commemorate? Americans in 2300 will have no need to look any further than Teddy Roosevelt for their historic examples? That's a point of view, I guess -- I disagree, but that's a point of view.

I think the time it was created in was one of optimism and hope for the future. I'd like to see the spirit of that time ressurrected. I don't think adding a more recent presidential hero would take anything away from the original work.
The question was using Mount Rushmore as more of a metaphor though. The rock already contains four of the presidents that would make most people's top three list. So, with those out of the way, who else is worthy of mention?

in a nutshell. the work is perfect as it is. to add to it would ruin the original intent and composition the artist intended. you don't add on to other national monuments after the fact.
