Why? There are no requirements that one be a natural born citizen to run for either the Illinois State Senate or U.S. Senate. There are requirements that one be a natural born citizen to run for President. I am giving Obama the benefit of the doubt here - he likely honestly believed he was a natural born citizen. If he is a natural born citizen - he knows that and can ride out the controversy with a good conscience. If he is not a natural born citizen - he knows that now also - and has lied to the American people. He will have to testify to the issue under oath at some point. No Clinton was not impeached for lying to the voters - he was impeached for lying under oath. All politicians lie to the voters - that is not a crime.
