Quite honestly, the engineers at major defense contractors like Lockheed I would argue are the most valuable asset to any military. The reason we're so dominant is because of the large gap in technology between ours and other world powers - which comes from people with a STEM background, who have the creativity and analytical abillity to think of the latest most efficient killing machines
The enlisted meathead would be useless without the support of all the equipment created by the nerds he used to pick on back in highschool
Ironically a lot of people doing that work nowadays are from other countries
Besides, wars are won and lost on the ground, not from behind a computer. Yea, we have a stunning tech advantage, but where has that gotten us? Two wars...one with an end that's pretty nebulous as to what we achieved (nothing IMO) and the other that will surely come to a bad end.

That's the fault of policy makers and poor political management. Our strengths come from our overwhelmingly superior technological force. Morality aside, I don't think there's any question the US could turn half of the world's countries into glass if they really wanted to. That power gives us a lot of leverage when dealing with other countries

Pfffft...you seem to get some perverse joy about being able to destroy other countries. I mean...big deal. I'm not a bully, and i'd be far happier if we left other nations to their own devices instead of inserting our big ass nose into their affairs.
Moreover, this "leverage" you're talking about aint nothing to brag about. I don't see Iran backing down...don't see the Taliban backing down either. Ditto Syria. And after the way we left Iraq, i don't see any real reason for the ebullience on your part.
To the point of this thread: even though i work in the defense establishment myself, i don't see any real need to pat a bunch of contractors on the back. They're paid (in most cases overpaid) market wages for their expertise, and it comes at a big price to the U.S. Taxpayer. That's all the damn thanks they deserve....myself included.
It has very little to do with technological advancement. How much more advanced do you have to be to kill a bunch of cave dwellers in Afghanistan? Our "dominance" comes from the fact that China is willing to subsidize us because they know the reward will be great when we default.
It might take a LARGE group with college degrees to think it up but it takes a couple guys with high school degrees to fix all the F-ups you guys put into the junk you make... What happened you get your butt kicked and lunch money took on a regular basis when you were a kid?
When I was in the Navy, We used to say "it takes a college degree to break it and high school diploma to fix".
suck sess oh.... success? The U.S. military has allot of good stuff for war but what does that solve? they don't have the money to build it or the money to use it, its all done on the IOU thing.
Iraq they have very little to fight with yet they made the Mils, look like asses. Yes Iraq lost allot of innocent lives, sad!!! they lost allot of their lively hood. They spent how much to fight off the U.S. VS the U.S. going bankrupt over it. where is the suck cess?
