I think at the heart of the problem, besides percieved racism, is this law. Here is a story about another "Justified killing" in florida They are set to give a verdict soon. And yes this guy was actually arrested.
It isn't fair that they arrest a black man who was obviously just defending himself from pesky white skateboarders. Obviously this old man was in fear of his life. BUT you do bring up a theory that should be tested. I know some black males who fear any white man walking towards them or making eye contact with them unless they know the white man. They especially fear a white man with a badge following them after dark because they know that their chances of living to see the sun rise again are small. So why not allow them to shoot? After all the laws should apply to all people.
How come James went after Dooley once the guy was walking away? James initiated the incident - the skateboarding issue had already blown over. James was after Dooley's weapon - he should have left Dooley alone.

Defending himself? Part of justifiable homicide involves proving your life is in immediate danger from the actions of another. Pray tell how skateboarding threatens your life in any appreciable manner? Both this guy and Zimmerman should be cell mates.

Skateboarding was not the issue that caused him to fire his weapon - being assualted was the cause. Dooley was walking back to his home - he had said his piece about the skateboarder - and then he was attacked because the airman was bothered by the gun.

You're missing the point. Because of FL's Stand Your Ground Law you have people pulling out guns when the situation doesn't require one.
They think someone making a face at them gives them the right to shoot and kill.
In other states this same scenario might have involved someone taking a swing at the other guy and the cops show up.
In FL it ends up with dead neighbors.
The old man should have stayed in his house and minded his own business, a lot of retired people in FL are bored so they have to go around and the "stir the pot" looking for violations in their HOA rules.
Sometimes it's reporting someone who has the wrong color mailbox, in this case Dooley got his knickers in a twist because a teen was skateboarding on a basketball court(oh the horror).
He should have stayed in his house and if it was that upsetting that this kid was skating on a basketball court then report it.

You don't come out your house like Wyatt Earp.
I am not missing the point at all. There is nothing wrong with the Stand Your Ground Law - it prevents people from being prosecuted for defending their life, home, and the lives of others.
Dooley was carrying his weapon and James got upset about that. Why? The man was walking back to his home - there was no immediate threat. James got killed because he assualted an older man who could not effectively defend himself without the weapon. James was with his children - he should have been guarding them instead of attacking someone.
People are making an issue of the skateboarding because it is a smokescreen that allows them to avoid the real issue. They want to disarm Mr. Dooley and anyone who carries a weapon openly. In case you have forgotten -The 2nd Amendment is still in force.

He attacked him because he drew his gun at him and the skate rats. If you're such a champion of the 2nd amendment then you should be outraged that someone pulled a gun out on someone else because he raised a stink about carrying a gun. That's just ****ing irresponsible, akin to me aiming at someone because they cut me off in traffic.

You might wanna read the second link as well since the witness clearly states that James only lunged for the weapon, AFTER it was drawn by Dooley.

You don't need to bring a gun outside to talk to a 14yr old about skateboarding.
This happened in what is an upscale subdivison of Tampa, not Compton.
