To address the point raised in the thread, a conservative pointed at the rise of religion based authoritarianism over thirty years ago. To quote:
"There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a debate than Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this supreme being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God's name on one's behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a loss of money or votes or both. I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in 'A,' 'B,' 'C,' and 'D.' Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me? And I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of 'conservatism.' "

Where I disagree with him is the timeline. He assumes a later beginning whereas I see this playing a role in keeping him out of republican nomination in the 1960s.
Is it because there are so many fundamentalist Christians, or is there some other reason?...Giving gays equal rights takes nothing away from anyone. Since we have done this in Canada the bigotry has pretty much faded away...
A very good question. Have you noticed how many hits gay posts get on this site? Many straight people are obsessed with this issue, and it is a fact that people in other developed, countries that are at least somewhat sophisticated are amazed as well.

Can you clarify this? It sounds like you are saying that anyone who questions or fights the oppression (perceived or real) of another person is an intolerant liberal.
Perhaps intolerance only comes into play when the cited reason for oppression happens to be the religion you adhere to?
Did you miss this part?
"Both are whacked out their damned minds. In a just world, those kind of people would be locked up in ASYLUMS, but unfortunately humanity has grown to accept mass hysteria, delusion and personality disorder typified by conservative religious sects as "faith" and we're asked to swallow and accept it without question!"
Replaying the "they're forcing their religion on us" card over and over because you can't come up with logical arguments to support your position gets a little stale after a while.
Don't you agree?
