“This is an important landmark,” said Roderick Harrison, a former chief of racial statistics at the Census Bureau who is now a sociologist at Howard University.

“This generation is growing up much more accustomed to diversity than its elders.”

Minorities made up roughly 2.02 million, or 50.4 percent of U.S. births in the 12-month period ending July 2011. That compares with 37 percent in 1990.

In all, 348 of the nation’s 3,143 counties, or 1 in 9, have minority populations across all age groups that total more than 50 percent.

In a sign of future U.S. race and ethnic change, the number of counties reaching the tipping point increases to more than 690, or nearly 1 in 4, when looking only at the under age 5 population.

Default Non Hispanic White Births now a Minority in America

Children from racial and ethnic minorities now account for more than half the births in the US, according to estimates of the latest US census data.

Black, Hispanic, Asian and mixed-race births made up 50.4% of new arrivals in the year ending in July 2011.

It puts non-Hispanic white births in the minority for the first time.

Sociologists believe the ongoing economic slowdown has contributed to a greater decline in birth rates among white people.

I wish all of these children well and am working to create a country with real "Liberty and Justice for All" along with Equal opportunity for economic, political and social advancement. I want them to be health, educated and secure.

Unlike most of the anti-immigrant or minority RWNJ's I do not hate anyone so I wish all children well. I include the kids of privilege because they too are just kids and should have the same opportunity for success and happiness as any other child.

This should not be surprising to anyone. It has been known for a long time that with the much birthrate of Hispanics, it was only a matter of time before the total births in that demographic would be higher than non-Hispanic whites.

Yes, one of the failure to assimilate means keeping their third world birth rates. Just coming to the USA to have the babies they cannot afford. The welfare programs make it all so nice.

Who cares what they're "accustomed" to? All that matters is what this new generation of "diversity" brings to America. Can anyone logically or factually claim that non-white people are leading the nation in education....leading the nation in entrepreneurialship.....leading the nation in job creation....leading the nation in prosperity?

No, not at this time. In fact, minorities are leading the nation in most of the dubious statistics that do harm to our country. One can only hope that the non-white generation of the future can prop America up in its prosperity in terms similar to previous generations.

That's all that matters. So far, evidence that this will actually occur is conspicuously absent.
