They forgot---JCP is where moms shop for the family. It is not a place where teens go. DUH. They don't know who their customers are so they deserved to lose them.

There aren't too many two dad families running around no matter what the media tries to promote. I guess they shrunk down their customer base pretty substantially with that one.

JC Penny always seemed like a family brand. I recall my mother dragging me into that store as a kid. Dumb idea on their part to change their image to become more hip and gay.

Penny's is a huge company that employes a lot of people. I imagine the employees and their families care. A couple of years ago, Penny had plans to expand, and buy up stores belonging to some of the other chains that had closed. This really doesn't bode well for the economy.

"Gay father" is an oxymoron. I guess they didn't get that.

It doesn't matter. JC Penny is not long for this world. Maybe they can merge with Sears/K-Mart and all go down together.

Dumping stock...

Macy's is as cheap as JC Penney, and has better stuff.

I'd rather go to Kohl's than JC Penney.

I wouldn't expect them to be doing well.

Management is probably freaking out because young and younger middle-aged people don't shop there and if that continues stick a fork in the brand/chain, cause the writing is on the wall.

The problem is that marketing it like Target won't fix the core problem, which has nothing to do with image. The core problem is people have pretty much abandoned lower-middle end retailers. First, the lower-middle/working class itself has shrunk dramatically as people have bifurcated towards middle/upper-middle class or impoverishment. Second, buying up/down has become really popular, again, especially with the younger generation. People will get the stuff they care less about at cheaper places and stuff they care more about at nicer or more narrowly targeted places (ironically Target, by selling stuff very cheap at a sufficient quality that people who have money and don't like the stuff available at Walmart/K-Mart/Dollar Stores are comfortable shopping there, was a major factor in creating and accelerating this trend). JC Penny has the misfortune of being the biggest player in a shrinking sector of retail and its fate will go with the segment; the marketing won't matter either way in the end.

edit: for a much shorter and more eloquent version of my point:

JC Penny is pretty popular in NM, which is mostly working-class. My observation is that their problem is more that they don't have skilled help. Their displays, especially in the menswear section, are always a mess, with stacks of product on the floor around the shelf displays. The place is unkempt. Retail pays really poorly, so that probably has something to do with it; they can't hire motivated staff. The rare employee the get who has a degree in business is underutilized. It's a poorly managed business. The same can be said for Wal-Mart and other chain stores. There's no attention to detail, and customers notice.
