The stereo typical street walkers are usually drug addicts. The "legal" prostitutes I met while in Europe were not drug addicts (except for cigarettes). Then again, they weren't street walkers. The ones I met were working their way across Europe for the summer.
Well, the word has been twisted (like many in society these days) to cover women who are married (by backwards fools who think it is a cool lifestyle)
LOL, Germany has/had legal prostitution for a long time.....check the "card" before you play.....
In Germany in the middle 50s prostitution was legal but if a John got a disease and reported the prostitute she was rounded up and put in hospital for treatment till she was clean. I will never forget a guy who turned in one of the Munich hos and about a month later she came into a bar, pointed her finger at him and screamed "Cheap bastard". Of course, everybody knew she had been under treatment. Yep all the girls and all the Johns on the "Strip" knew where she had been.
They are legally required to pay taxes on their income, just like anyone else. They can easily file a Schedule C and call themselves whatever they want. If they don't report their income or pay taxes, they're opening themselves up to criminal charges. Tax evasion laws apply to everyone, regardless of how one's income is earned.
How many of them do you think report their "wages"? I say damned few.
Depends, was this his only ho? May have charged more depending on her looks, social skills, level of clients. Street walkers don't usually get much more than what you listed depending on their looks and level of drug addiction. Brothel workers in legal brothels can get more per client. Call girls can get much higher, in some cases over $1,000 per client, depending on looks, location, client income, time with client, and what the client wishes to do. For some, the high price buys the prostitute's silence (see politicians and ministers for example).
In Italy in the mid-50s the brothel workers wanted us all to know that the lowest people on earth were the street walkers. Those who worked in brothels were always clean or out on the streets they went.

Back then the legal brothels were still open in Italy.
It was the influence of the Italian Communist Party that got them closed down. Karl Marx advocated banning prostitution which caused communists to work to ban it. That's how it was banned in France and Italy (Marxists also played a major role in banning prostitution in the US and other places where it was banned ; funny how the conservatives on the board are in favor of banning prostitution, because conservatives historically were against banning it.)

Didn't know that--that is interesting stuff.
Prostitution was generally legal in the US until the early 20th century, when the progressives targeted booze, prostitution, and drugs. The progressives loved to ban things.
A major impetus for bans on prostitution and drugs was racism. The first case of the Mann Act (prostitution ban) was black boxer Jack Johnson for having relations with a white girl. Mann Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Then as now, progressives were nothing if not prohibitionists and racists.

I wouldn't blame "progressives" entirely. When it comes to controlling the sexual behavior of others, the religious right and radical feminism have been part of an "unholy alliance" for the last four decades.
