PSU alum here, don't care for Joe Paterno, never did, never will, could care less if PSU football got shuttered forever.
If I were a multi-billionaire, I would offer a huge amount of money to take the school private, raise admissions standards, cut the student body by 50% because it is way too crowded, change the name, and not give any preference to athletic recruits.
But for now, i'll settle for making my voice known about taking down that ridiculous statue and changing the name of the library for starters.
For what it's worth, so would I. But the model to be followed should be Grove City, Hillsdale, or some similar institution where individual liberty/responsibility,skepticism toward Big Brother/Sister, and free-market disciplines were the cornerstones -- no left-wingers need apply.

I hope the victims go after the Paterno family legally. To think that they will continue to profit from Joe Paterno's actions makes me want to vomit:
"In the end, the board of trustees — bombarded with hate mail and threatened with a defamation lawsuit by Mr. Paterno’s family — gave the family virtually everything it wanted, with a package worth roughly $5.5 million. Documents show that the board even tossed in some extras that the family demanded, like the use of specialized hydrotherapy massage equipment for Mr. Paterno’s wife at the university’s Lasch Building, where Mr. Sandusky had molested a number of his victims. The details of Mr. Paterno and his family’s fight for money seem to deepen one of the lasting truths of the Sandusky scandal: the significant power that Mr. Paterno exerted on the state institution, its officials, its alumni and its purse strings." http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/14/sp...y.html?_r=1&hp

I would just correct 2 points.
1. Joe was..not is... as he is now dead.
2. Joe's efforts to cover up this scandal was (IMHO) less about the football program and more about his personal reputation and the billion or so dollars Penn State raised based almost entirely on Joe Pa's reputation.
There is nothing Penn State can do to fix this. There is nothing Penn State can do to undo what is done. But what can be done is that Penn State ought to forgo football for the forseeable future, and it should give up all of the funds JoePa was rasied from the point where we all know Joe knew something was wrong.
We are talking about a half billion dollars in university endowment money.
Wow, changing your ways is an option yes? Now, how much money are you talking about? Bernie Madoff "made" a lot more than that, should we ignore his crimes since the take was so big? Mistakes were made, now let's forget it and move on? Let he who is without sin cast the first stone? That's a great way to let criminals go free and commit more crime.
Why doesn't PSU remove the "U" from their name? They appear to be a rah-rah football franchise with a pretend university attached. Why doesn't the NCAA shut down their program?
It's useful that you propose PSU to forego football "for the foreseeable future" but I say they should quit entirely that sport which has so completely poisoned their mindsets and instead try to learn what "university" means. Currently they clearly don't know or care, and the thousands of PSU students who take to the streets to protest--not their franchise's endorsement of child rape, but the criticism they received over it--should be placed in a re-education camp. Maybe we should call it PSU.
Since you admit it's all about money (though you see that as a defense) I agree with the remark upthread that the money should be dispensed to the victims. Maybe then the PSU community will learn the first thing. So far it's not clear that they have.
I raised my kid so he would not allow himself to be raped. What is wrong with kids that are too damn dumb not to know to resist someone sticking their penis up the kid's ass? If ya over 9 ya gotta be pretty stupid.
Yeah what's with all the rape in our society anyway? Don't people know they shouldn't be raped?

Wow, that is indeed nauseating. The PSU Board of Trustees is obviously a bunch of low-lifes. This reminds me of what just happened at the University of Virginia, where the entire university community called to arms over their own Board which had forced the resignation of the university president. In the ensuing brouhaha it became clear that the Board was stuffed with ignorant, know-nothing political-patronage types who should not be in charge of policy for a major university. I imagine that a similar situation obtains in Pennsylvania, which would explain a lot. It's definitely a dilemma when institutions this important are under political control.
Certainly, we should blame the victims and not dare tarnish the name of the great Paterno.
We need to quit putting our college football coaches on a pedestal. Time and time again - they have shown that they are just men; and there are those that will do anything for the almighty Game.
I find it sorta disturbing that a game where people throw around a brown ball could be put in such esteem as to develop to a point where the culture of this pastime in more important than raping innocent boys.
Joe Paterno turns a blind eye to child rape being performed by his best buddy for 15+ years for the purpose of preserving Penn State Football reputation. He silently colludes with other university officials to remain mum. All because of a football team and a tarnished legacy?
Joe Paterno is the scum of the earth and his reputation should no longer be associated with football, but instead forever be associated as an accomplice to child rape and sexual molestation.
We may be on the opposite sides politically, but on this topic, I couldn't agree more.
