Oh yes, people with mental problems can get assault weapons in Austria and France.

Did the shooter have documented mental problems? No? Then he would have been qualified to own a firearm in Western European countries.
How do you gauge mental stability? Objective test, or subjective judgment? If subjective judgment, what is to prevent corruption from swaying the decision one way or another, through bribery, political friends/political enemies list, etc?

shooting may be politically motivated. Breaking news! reporters have been looking into the background of shooter James Holmes and discovered a Jim Holmes of Aurora, CO page on a Tea Party website. For the past several days Rush Limbaugh and Tea Party republicans have been saying the Batman movie was a conspiracy with the villain in the movie named "Bane" in reference to Mitt Romney's Bain
I agree with most of what you're saying, but the part about it being a racial thing to call the guy a "psycho" simply because he's white is off base. This wasn't a crime or gang related shooting--it was random. Sane people don't commit mass, random shootings just for the heck of it. Just like every other random, mass shooting in this country, regardless of the race of the shooter, I'll bet you anything that they're going to find out that this guy is really really mentally ill.
My only problem with this is that this guy is given the benefit of the doubt, by suggesting he is mentally ill. We have no facts to support this, but folks buy into this because the reality is too hard to deal with. Nowhere within this thread has this guy been called a thug (the most anyone can say is "punk").
Not sure what you mean about this not being a "crime-related shooting". BTW, there is plenty of bloodshed in the hood that is senseless and random. No one is calling these people psychos or mentally disturbed though. We have names like thugs for them.
