also marriage is regulated at the state level, and thus it is up to the states to decide if gay marriage should be legal or not. and to that end, the citizenry of the state can usually get enough signatures to put the issue on a public ballot and let the people decide if they want gay marriage or not.

It sounds good.

What I'm unable to understand is, why would gays want to marry, if they in fact respect the institution of marriage? What exactly is to be accomplished by same sex marriage?

I would think they want to be able to share in a legal committed relationship the same as heterosexuals. antredd

Respectfully; If it is something that is not voted on, and it is a right, where is the proof of its being a gay right? Is this the reason so many marriages have been broken; and not by coincidence but deliberately, mind you.
What it seems like to me, what I am detecting, is a sense of envy/jealousy. It -- this situation -- appears devoid of character or substance; quite driveling to say the least. Just my two cents.

If there is no right to be gay, then there is no right to be straight either.

I can still recall when homosexuality was a mental illness (originally). Suddenly, it became political espousing "gay" rights. And, many "gays" who appear to be profligate, are inclined to pedophilia; a grave danger for our youths.

This thread is not about voting on being gay; it is about voting on same-sex marriage. And marriage itself is a right.

I remember learning that seizures were once considered to be caused by demon possession. Being lefthanded was a mark of the devil.

Funny thing, we tend to learn more about things the more we study.

No, it wasn't a mental illness, it was labeled a mental disorder based on no evidence other than social stigma. It was only in the DSM from 1952 to 1973.

Incorrect again. The vast majority of men who sexually abuse boys are heterosexual in their adult preferences and are not true or fixated pedophiles, just opportunistic child molestors. A small minority have no adult sexual preferences at all, only for children- these are true or fixated pedophiles. This is based on over 60 years of research. Read my first blog if you want to see the research.

There is, in November, in Washington and Maryland (referenda on same-sex marriage bills passed by the legislatures & signed by the governors into law earlier this year), in Maine (a referendum to overturn the state's current prohibition on same-sex marriage) and in Minnesota (a referendum to codify the current statutory ban in the state constitution).
