Here are my four reasons/hypotheses for why blacks continue this trend:
1) Government Jobs: Many blacks have found upward mobility to be possible with the help of government jobs. These jobs have been made widely available to blacks through quotas, affirmative action, etc., and a very strict non-discrimination policy. This could possibly be part of the reason many blacks side with the bigger-government Democratic Party: more government jobs means more black jobs.
2) Habit: Many blacks continue to pull the lever based on what they've always done in the past.
3) Southern whites: possibly because of the great shift in American politics in the late 1960s, when southern whites began to vote overwhelmingly Republican, blacks stuck with the Democrats and used the party to further advance their agenda. In the wake of the civil rights movement, they couldn't bring themselves to vote alongside those who had attempted to stifle their civil rights.
4) Money: Blacks continue to vote Democratic because they're the party that gives them the most stuff. Higher taxation, higher spending Democrats are more likely to funnel cash through housing, welfare, public assistance, EBT, etc.

I vote for Number 4, "Blacks continue to vote Democratic because they're the party that gives them the most stuff." That's why a lot of demographic groups vote Democrat and the Dems know it. Around election time is the best time to line up for "stuff" from the Democrats. And about Number 1, the feds vote Democrat because the Democrats give them "stuff" like big pay raises. If blacks are highly represented in the federal workforce they are there with all of the other federal workers looking for "stuff." In other words, it's not because they're black. They, like all of the other federal workers, want more "stuff."

Lower and middle class Democrats vote for whoever promises them the most benefits and perks and have the nerve to call Republicans greedy (or stupid for voting against their own best interests).

Republicans don't really care for minorities or the poor, if they did blacks would probably vote conservative because most of them are when it comes to religion ,morals etc
Loyalty, but my take on it is Dems tend to carry the large cities and urban areas. With the exception of the old Southern South a black in a very rural setting is a rarity, although this is changing. There's safety in numbers and I don't think the blacks trust the rural Republicans and with good reason considering our treatment of them in times past.
Out of curiosity, why has the black community shunned people like Ron Paul who wishes to free them from incarceration for petty crimes such as pot possession? Why does an only half black man want to keep black people incarcerated? Why do black people actually tolerate Obama for this?
Because the black community (and most "ethnic" communities) are simply better at identifying and voting for their self interests than the "white" community is.

Thank you for so succinctly explaining the pitfalls of social democracies.
I'm looking for an open, honest discussion that explores the question thoroughly. Right now, over 50% of black youths are unemployed. Far more of them are on government assistance now than when Pres. Obama took office. Many of them are in disagreement with Obama's recent decision to come out and publicly support gay marriage: Black Pastors Oppose President, Democrats on Same Sex Marriage - Star Parker - Page 1
Going back even further, many of the Dems' plans (specifically LBJ's Great Society) to lift blacks out of poverty have not worked; instead, they have had the opposite effect. In 1963, it was a Democratic governor who stood in the schoolhouse door to prevent blacks from going to an Alabama school; while in 1957, it was a Republican president who sent federal troops to force Central High in Little Rock to integrate. The Voting Rights Act and Civil Rights Acts of 1965 and 1964 were vetoed by Democrats in Congress, mainly because Republicans had voted for it.

Why is the earth round?
It just IS.....
If you vote for a political party because of the "stuff" they give you, wouldn't you continue to vote for that political party even when that party is obsolete?
I forgot who said it but I recall reading a quote that said " The poor have been voting democratic for 50yrs yet they're still poor"
