as soon as there is no money for the stay home and play Internet all day, the ones who spend all their time tweeting and playing games won't know how to get through the day....so they will be out in the streets and angry, just like Europe....cutting the ones off internet who are supposed to be ready and willing for work in order to get the hand out, should be put in motion right away. The internet in opinion interferes with progress because it is social, addictive and does not add to anything but potential loss of focus on getting things done and trying new creative idea's.
Yours and other's opinions which insinuate a general sense of entitlement and laziness existing are probably not far off the mark. However, this is a byproduct of artificial conditions created to effect this very situation of dependency on the government, and thereby more controllable by that government.
Like the old saying, "give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, but teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime". The man given the fish is totally dependent and very much at your mercy, while the man who was taught how to fish, is independent, and no longer needs you.
So the answer cannot be to simply feed him fish for a long enough period that he is helpless without you, and then refuse to provide the fish ... such an act would be cruel and callous, and particularly so, if you have also removed most all of the fish from the lake, and have shipped all of the available fishing poles overseas, too.
If the U.S. got rid of welfare, what would happen?
1. The crime rates would soar
2. The birth rate would drop radically
3. Many cities would emulate Detroit
4. The death rate would climb because of drug wars
I don't think the birth rate would drop radically. The birth rate did not drop radically during/after welfare reform. There are people who like to pop out babies - think they're entitled - and are going to keep doing it whether welfare exists or not.
Perhaps the better question might be, "What would happen if Congress eliminated all corporate welfare?" That would be very interesting. Exxon would go into shock at having to pay taxes on their billions and billions in profit.

When people are out of work, and have that much extra free time on their hands, what are they likely to do more of? Drink, smoke and screw.
All of this and an negligible effect on the federal budget.
Do some research 13% is a pretty big portion of the budget.. Taxing the rich, as numb nutz wants to do, amounts to about .04% of GDP per year.. All that does is make liberals feel better.. Now, getting rid of welfare on the other hand...
It would have a significantly higher impact than taxing the rich which is a drop in the bucket.. This is just one of many links but either one you look at the percentage of hand-outs is very significant.
Excuse me? How much money both aqt the federal and state level does this country spend each year on welfare? You have Medicaid, food stamps, section 8, LIHEAP, school meals, cash assistance etc.... the list is endless. To suggest these programs are not substantial is being naive.
roughly 14% of spending so whatever 14% of 3 trillion is.

Riots on a large scale. We have these entitlement programs so that the bottom of society doesn't riot and burns things down. With Professional Sports and Shows like American Idol and Big Brother we keep these people distracted and busy. The Romans actually came up with this concept, its called "Bread and circuses".
