A life sentence for someone that has been convicted of his 9th DWI is not too extreme of a sentence:
If, he was told by the court after his 8th DWI that if he ever got another one, that it would mean he would be going to prison for the rest of his life.
But if the sentencing judge that handled the 9th DWI, decided to just send him to prison for life, and there was no objective standard set prior and/or it was not made known to him after the 8th DWI that he would face life in prison if he was convicted again, then in that case it is wrong. Especially, considering that a DWI in most states is still a misdemeanor and misdemeanors result in probation and/or jail time, but not life sentences in prison.
If he knew after the previous DWI (8th one) that he would be going to prison for life if he got another one, then he should have at the very least stopped drinking completely and/or never owned a vehicle.
Post of the thread - judges should have latitude to minimize sentences, but not to maximize.
The upper limit for a sentence should only be legislatively prescribed.
Are you equating homosexuality with rampant alcoholism?! Good lord, that's just about the most asinine thing I've ever read on here, and that is truly saying something.
Both are choices - that is what I am saying.
Nothing makes a person drink, and nothing forces a person to be gay, both are willful choices based in weakness of mind and sin.
The Pharisees were legalistic and were about blindly following the law and were oblivious to the fact that people struggled with sin. They did not understand the verse that states that "the LORD desires mercy, not sacrifice".
Jesus called them hypocrites because they did not acknowledge their own sin.
To them, there was no "overcoming" because they didn't see sin as a struggle - they viewed it strictly in terms of the Mosaic Law.
Yes, please let's start maiming people in the name of justice.
