However, you cannot infringe on their ability to speak out on social issues and so forth.....like abortion, death penalty and so forth.
For example, your views would have been used to suppress the civil rights movement which had deep deep roots in the church and the powers that be could easily deem those to be political views and started shutting down the churches etc. Careful what power you wish to give others without weighing the impact over ALL issues.

the various churches may indeed speak out all they want on ANY political issue, but then you shouldn't get tax money from the citizens. that doesn't "suppress" anything-because they can raise their own money for the causes they feel strongly towards, and what is wrong with that?-- put your OWN money where your mouth is.
i believe in a separation of church and state.:
The Pilgrim fathers fled this system of State-religion. They knew that a "state tithe" for Anglicanism was not an endorsement of religion per se. It was the forcible imposition of one religion over all others. Some colonies then developed their own miniature state religions, which generated the same problem on a different scale. The Constitution settled the issue by preventing the government from weighing in on behalf of any particular established Church. This affording minority religions protection from the unfair advantage gleaned by any church able to align with government.
