Is that why this issue is of particular importance to you? You've made quite a few posts about it...

My personal thoughts are that the pamphlets are a good idea, but it was very unfortunate that they did not reach their target market. 10 & 11 is way to young for the vast majority of sex education... "entering puberty" stuff is maybe all that is appropriate.

I am sorry to disappoint you that there is no meaning behind my name but since this is the first forum I have ever been on I never gave my "handle” much thought. city-data citi I am a female girl.

I decided to post a thread about this article because it was in the news today. This subject is of importance to me because of what teens have told me they have been exposed to in their schools.

If an adult shows a minor pornograghic materials even in cartoon form its considered corruption of a minor. These mistakes should not happen and should never be tolerated. We are forced to place our trust in the schools our children attend. Is unreasonable to hold them accountable? This isnt a case of ooops We forgot to supply pencils or we put the wrong menue out for this weeks school lunches. This is a case of supplying children with very adult very graghic materials. materials that any parent should have the right to decline. Mistake? or incompetence the damage is done and someone needs to be held accountable in the strongest of measures. ie they should forfeit a job.

No offense, but I think that type of attitude - sex is dirty! - is what gets teens pregnant (or worse). I knew kids like that, mostly from religious or strict/conservative families, and they were the biggest hoochies around! Either that or they were extremely naive, and would fall for lines like "you can't get pregnant the first time you have sex." IMO it's best to be honest and open, or you'll be dealing with major problems later. My parents didn't really talk to me about sex, but made it clear they were an "open door" - and certainly never made it into something evil.

Since we have had more of this graphic sex education we have seen far more teens pregnant. Maybe it is the casual way sex ed is taught? In some cases the encouraging way it is taught?

Where I grew up the few teens that got pregnant were from families that treated sex casually. What we need is some teens to tape record what they are being taught in the schools.

How did educational material become pornography?

I do believe that citigirl has a point also, society has moved so far away from morals and family values. What citigirl I think is referring to is that what many believe is sexual perversion is being taught in our schools as an acceptable lifestyle and they are teaching this at a young age. High schoolers being taught sexual diversity is not the same as 10-12 year olds being taught sexual diversity. As you said age appropriate. We have taught about government interference in another thread. Do we want to allow the government to decide what should be taught to our children? Do we want our government to push their views of what type of sexual relationships are okay? You have said this before, the less government involvement the better.
Since when does teaching & informing equal PUSHING? If they are going to teach kids about sex, it's best to give them all the facts... or would you prefer to pick & choose, thus leaving them to figure the rest out for themselves? What about the teenager who's struggling with his sexuality, and needs to know he's not a "freak?" Suicide is a huge concern among gay and questioning teens, which I believe is best addressed through education - for both the struggling teen, and others who might not understand him/her. Talking about "alternative lifestyles" isn't going to make anyone switch teams, but it does help those who are already thinking of playing.

People like Sheila Kruel write some of the sex ed that is being taught in the schools. It is also because some materials that are finding their way into the hands of children (oops!) via the schools and special interest groups are very pornographic.

Do you have stats for that comment? I'm not 100% sure, but I do believe we've seen a decrease in recent years... and even if there was an increase, can we attribute that to sex ed, or possibly other societal factors?

Well, we obviously had different experiences, since I always noticed the opposite. Case in point, my friend with a strict mother has been pregnant 7 times... I have never been pregnant or caught a disease, and my parents are very liberal. That's probably because I know what a condom is, and how to properly use it. Of course there are different stories for everyone, but can you honestly say that it's better for kids to be uninformed? Everyone will have sex eventually, and I'd like my kids to be well-prepared and educated when the time comes - just my opinion and philosophy, take it or leave it.

P.S. I've worked in and with public schools for many years, and still have no clue about this "evil education" that's supposedly taking place. Plus I remember having sex ed myself in 5th grade, and it didn't corrupt me at all. Just scared me a bit, when they showed the childbirth video... talk about a good cure for teen pregnancy!

You know that I am growing old, and probably just not as up to date as you are, so can you educate me about Sheila Kruel and Fistgate.

When I search for Sheila Kruel, the first site that comes up is CDF, and a thread of yours.

Never too late to learn.
