Not exactly ..... this is progress only when it occurs on a battlefield. When it's six women attempting to defend schoolchildren against an armed nutcase it's time to yell get rid of guns.

Pretty much, if that is the path that a woman chooses to pursue.

Now what I see as troubling, not only to say hypocritical, is that out of one side of the conservative mouth, we hear words like rights of individual, being judge by the character of one's content, individual free will, the end of the nanny state, and other such catch phrase. But it reality those wonderful catch phrase always seem to come with a caveat.

the rights of the individual unless you are a woman,

the content of your character, unless you are a woman,

the right of individual free will, unless you are a woman,

the right not to have the government act as a nanny guaranteeing your safety, unless you are a woman,

I won't go into the right not to be paid for equal work... that's a another whole can of bullshiite.

Women are good for more than romance, I assure you, and have a broader spectrum of interests.

However I'm leaning towards this not being a very good idea too, to have women in combat situations...reason being is that I think that it will make the male soldiers less effective to have women present. Many men have instincts to protect women and it could interfere with their missions. Besides which I've already heard plenty of stories from my husband (Army) about deployed women who work on the foreign bases being involved in all sorts of trouble, from sleeping with everyone to officers facing adultery charges, to allegations of a prostitution ring...and then there are the military training "schools" where all kinds of sexual shenanigans are taking place. A woman might have noble things on her mind when she enlists, but it does seem that the lowest common denominator, and nature taking its course, is rather how the military operates in a day to day fashion.

As for me, I'm glad we don't even live on post!
I think almost every boy romanticizes war.
Now we are selling this to our girls too.

I also believe it is impractical to have women in combat formations for the same reason that studies have shown boys and girls tend to learn better in segregated classrooms.

As well as the discrepancy in physical strength.

Biologically speaking males are more expendable then females.

Men are not Women and Women are not Men.
I think we do society a dis-service by pretending they are interchangeable.

Nobody (AFAIK) is trying to pretend they're interchangeable... as a proud woman, I actually find that concept rather offensive. But if a woman can perform the duties, pass the physical tests, etc, she should have EQUAL rights to be in combat if she chooses. Why should men only get the option of trying? And don't give me that nonsense about "men not being able to focus around women," because that is basically a Sharia/Hasidic type of attitude - in other words, incredibly misogynistic and archaic. If a man (or woman) can't control their hormones in a combat situation, they have no place being there anyway.

Because Afghanistan and Iraq really didn't have "front lines", the concept of a non-combat soldier is ridiculous.

Convoys are attacked, and female driver fight back. Army-run schools are attacked, and female teachers fight back. Women have been serving as combat soldiers ever since there were females allowed in the army.

Get over it.

I wonder if this will bring less women or more women to the military? Be interesting to see.Personally I don't care if they are allowed to serve in combat. Its a personal choice to 1. Sign up for the military and 2. pick infantry or something that's going to make sure you serve in the front lines of combat.

You are a product of a privileged society.

All this liberal BS lip service about protecting women and children - yet Obama wants to put our young women in harms way.

I wouldn't care to see or hear of anyone being hurt, but given the choice I'd care much less about you bleeding on a battlefield than a woman or a child.

That's just mho.

With the exception of the lack of Civil Rights, most people would rather it be 1953 I would imagine

Who cares if their are women in combat? Kind of sexy in a shoot em up kind of way

Women want equality, why should they be denied? Now they will have the privilege to sign up for selective service and fight in wars. It's not necessarily a bad idea, women fought for Russia since WW1 and they still won wars.

Equal is equal. Oh, and rev up the selctive service to start signing up the women too. Again, equal is equal, for good or bad.
