The Russian Tu-95 Bear-H strategic bombers were equipped with nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and were followed by U.S. jets as they circumnavigated Guam on Feb. 12 local time—hours before President Barack Obama’s state of the union address.
Given the time zone differences this is an impossible timeline.
Honestly, how can you write stuff like that? I mean, when my grandma started making commentary like that she was about 6months from going to the home.
There have been a ton of gaffes the past couple years of Republican politicians accidentally calling Russia "the Soviet Union." My post was partly tongue in cheek, though I don't doubt some like Sen. McCain would be cheering on a war with Russia if it was even a remote possibility right now.
The second largest military power in the world flies nuclear weapons around in circles through our air space.....
"According to one military official, the Russian Bear bombers remained in international airspace, the encounter between the U.S. and Russian aircraft “stayed professional” and there was no incident. "
Russian strategic interest in the South Pac is rather limited. US operations there are more concerned with China. At any rate, a buzzing by a Bear, with intercept in international air space, doesnt cause me panic. There are incidents happening every day, over the Bering Strait, that are lots more nail biting.
Fighter/interceptors have a high stress mission. The Russians have been playing dangerous games of Chicken with us for a LONG time. Now, I am curious as to how this particular bombers payload was identified. Neither we or the Russians send out probes carrying live nukes.
To hang a nuke on a plane takes some high level authorization. And, I am unaware of operational parameters, with us or the Russians, that would allow a nuclear payload for a training or intell gathering operation. Makes no sense.
Using live nukes for a game playing hop? I don't see how anyone would want to take a chance like that. Russian air power plays games against our Naval power all the time. Probing carrier groups defensive umbrellas, dropping sonar buoys looking for subs, and we push back, regular like. Far scarier stuff than a single Bear buzzing Guam, is going on as we speak here.
Again, I cant see the Russians sending a live nuclear payload out with a flight of one plane, for a chicken op. If there really was a hot loadout on this bird, I, personally, would see that as highly provocative, and cause for concern. But, I highly doubt that was the case.
Now, I am curious as to how this particular bombers payload was identified.
from what i can tell it's nothing more than a "telephone operator" scenario, "could have carried nukes" being repeated often enough to become "was carrying nukes".

Unlike the Russian subs no doubt within easy striking distance of our coasts that are carrying nukes?
Obviously using logic, I would surmise that the source writers wanted to show a AP pic of a Russian Bear Bomber so readers could see what one looked like without any relevance to the F-18 Hornet fighter.
Or they wanted to mislead the reader into believing that there was photographic evidence for the story when there wasn't.

That would probably not be the first time NBC's webpage has linked to a bull**** source.
If you think this is something new I would suggest paying closer attention or rather using google to do some research.
Yeah, uh, BITE ME. Whether it's been done before is completely irrelevant to my response to NJ.

I never said I did. In fact, I never said that I was convinced that the incident even took place. There seems to be some legitimate concern about whether or not this happened, and I haven't posted anything that indicates I'm convinced either way.
My comment, which somehow you apparently failed to actually read, was in reference to the astounding apathy displayed by NJ about this. Doesn't matter if it did or didn't take place - he/she was commenting with the clear assumption that it did, so I replied to THAT PERSON following and commenting on THEIR position.
Next time you want to put words in my mouth, consider it a bit more carefully. I don't let people get away with that crap, and I WILL call you on it.
