Had he wanted the baby and she didn't he'd have no 'choice' legally but to stand by and watch her terminate the baby. As it was he didn't want it but she was about to put him on the hook financially for 18-21 years. Maybe if things were more equitable between the sexes and didn't so unfairly favor the woman this sort of violence wouldn't occur.
