My Mom smoked 3 packs a day, my step dad smoked the same or more. They smoked in the car and often would not let us open the windows. I hated it, I was always sick with a sore throat, ear aches etc, often lost more than 30 days of school each year. When I moved out of the house all of those illnesses dissapeared and I am now and have been for years, seldom ever sick. I agree that parents should be thinking of their kids and their kids health when ever they light up while in the presence of their kids. My Mom died of COPD, my step dad from cancer, my brother from cancer, my grandfather from COPD, my real dad from lung cancer and an uncle from COPD, all heavy smokers, also two aunts and and three uncles from cancer or copd on my dads side all smoker and drinkers. One aunt is still alive in great health at 83, never smoked nor drank in her life. I do not smoke, never have even tried it and rarely drink.
Sadly, there are still many people who refuse to believe that second hand smoking exists.
The assumption here is that someone needs protecting. Where is the limit in the governments role at protecting people? If I allow my kid to dive off the cliff at the local watering hole most people would probably considered that to be a dangerous activity. Should the government step in?
Then we should abolish child labor laws; abolish the drinking age; abolish mandatory school, etc.
Its okay to kill children abroad, but the same government has a duty to interfere with almost every aspect of their upbringing here? I think you're the one in the leotard doing the stretch.
In other news:My father was a chain smoker, I owe it to him that I never even tried a cigarette.
Let those governments worry about their children(don't harbor terrorists)...and our government worry about ours......and let's not hijack threads to promote an agenda

You just keep looking the other way while the rest of us pay attention.
These need to be changed, if a 12 year old wants to go down the the farm to pick tomatoes in the summer they should be allowed to do that. A farmers children should be able to work on their farm.

abolish the drinking age;
Agree.

abolish mandatory school, etc.
Wouldn't agree at all but if I was in charge there would massive overhaul of how we educate children giving the parents much broader choices.
