It's an essential piece of evidence and very credible because it goes against her bias and the prosecution's bias. It's an admission against interest, and those are normally credible. (Why would she make up a statement that would help the defense if it weren't true, especially after she had been coached by Crump and the prosecution?)
Please read the law... You can't defend yourself unless someone has done something unlawful to you and believe you are in imminent danger of death or great bodily harm.
Yes, if you say that happened, like Zimmerman did, the only other witness will be too dead to testify against you.
