[quote=mb1547;30597227]The way we treated soldiers returning home from Vietnam was disgraceful. People were forced to go, and then they were attacked for going, but I"m not sure it was all by the hippies.

I think cheilgirl is wrong--some soldiers did have a hard time of it when they came home--['/QUOTE]

Cheilgirl says anecdotal information doesn't count. You say she's wrong. I side with you. What can't be debunked is clocking-in on my first day back on the job with my former employer and finding "Baby Killer" scrawled across my time card. That's simply one of many personal examples when I returned.

But you're right about the rest and, no, it wasn't all at the hands of hippies. My wife was one. She was also a military brat like I was. She supported the troops, just not the cause. There were many who were smart enough to make that differentiation. Others, non-hippies as well, weren't that bright.

This is the essence of hipsterism. Being cool by fighting what's everyone else thinks is cool. By doing this, you are showing how cool you are by not caring about what's cool. The more you do this, the more cool you are.

Make sense?

Actually, I've personally met a number of Vietnam Vets who DID get the "baby killer" type treatment. It's just anger finding its way out. Very rude. These are people who cannot understand that there is a government war and a people's war. Now, we elect the people to represent us, so if they decide we gotta go to war, we line up and sign up. BUT the vast majority of Americans understood easily that Vietnam Vets were drafted for the most part, most didn't kill anything much less babies, and gave our military BIG welcomes. Nothing made my heart sing more than the first time the motocycle people rode in by the hundreds and hundreds to honor our fallen men at the Vietnam Memorial Monument. I was so proud of those guys. Lots of times, people who dig it out of themselves to be someone, be who they are, who give a dang about stuff, will tend to gather.

As for what became of all of us, we're all still the same. But as it is with all groups of people, some folks run this dang country, businesses, recreated mass transit, started looking for new fuel... thre's a fellow that lives in the country in California, and folks with Mercedes Benzes and whatnot drop their cars off at his shop, and a week later, when he gets around to it, they come back for their solar/electric car, whatever they want. President Clinton was the closest we had to what we cosidered a modern fellow, he smoked some pot, a fling with a cutie in the kitchen wasn't too big a deal, and he got this economy going so fast it near 'bout caused Bush to run the train off the tracks. Good grief. Democrats are for Joe Blow. Republicans are for big business. And it's been like this since before the turn of the century, back when women and children worked for pennies in hot, grim factories, no breaks, no holidays,no nohing, until the Dems got in and responded to this sort of thing. And it took FDR, another Democrat, to look out his window and ssee long soup lines for able-bodied workers who were starving to death after World War II in combination with the market crash of 1929. This is what as known to Republicans as handouts to people who haven't done anything their wholes lives. Well, this is one "social" program I do agree with, and it's come out of my paycheck since 1968, missed a few years here and there for universit and grad work, but enough to where my car wreck, when it disabled me, my back and legs went, they don't work,my mind went because of all the pain that BILLIONS are spent by Republican-supported companies for medicines, tha wouldn't nobody give me, and now I ain't got hardly nothing left, but a lot of screamers who say I'm sealing. SIGH.

And for anyone who is still reading this and trying to understamd the hippy culture and the newer hipster culture, folks, for anyone who has recently fell out of a 100-story window nad got up and walked away, PLEASE, get the hellout of politics, and go to upper Mongolia, start stomething up over there if you're so all fired up at how President Obama (my man, vsionary, peace, genius) is doing,if he Republicans would get the eff out of the way, for CRYING OUT LOUD, we'd have SO MUCH of what all of us want: peace in our lifetimes, everything we've ever wanted (I got one car and a trailer and that's all I need, plus the dog), free health care, fairness for all (which EQUALS if Joe Blow gives a percent of his payroll, SO DO THE BILLIONARIES...NEVERMIND MILLIONAIRES, we got enough billionaires to pay off the national debt, as if nobody has evre had no debt before)... I'M JUST SAYING, vote Democrat in the midterms, and all your dreams "really will come true." gg

Yes we all know the Democrats are the party of self-control spending.......just one example from the post below, I can see why you think everyone else should pay for others debts. When the people you follow do the same, what should we expect from their supporters!!!!

A Clinton fundraiser in the Northeast told me that gathering money for her in 2007-08 was like selling ice cream bars in January. He had to call and call and meet and meet and convince and finally he'd get a modest check. While his Obama competitors in those days could send an e-mail and launch a flood of checks of the maximum amount.
After the Unity unity rally, Obama appealed to his donors to help retire Clinton's debts, which had ballooned to $25 million. The response of most was, Why?
She ran up her own bills fruitlessly trying to beat us and playing pretty rough along the way
(those damaging racist sermon videos of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright weren't likely leaked to reporters by Obama's own people).

Thing I liked about the sixties, was that a person could be him/her self.

As "Goldie" explained on Laugh-In, "This is my bag, and in my bag is my thing."

What "big welcomes"? There were NO big welcomes. There were no parades when guys came home from Vietnam. There was usually family and maybe a few friends at an airport meeting someone coming off a plane. Or families gathered at a dock when the ship came back to the States.

I know because I have a husband and two brothers who saw combat in Vietnam.

I'm pretty sure the motorcycle salute you're talking about is Rolling Thunder. The war ended in 1975. They didn't ride to the Wall until 1987. (Better late than never.)

The Wall was dedicated on November 13, 1982 following a massive march by Vietnam Vets. A march they organized themselves towards a Wall they fought hard to get. I know because I was there that day. That day was the first parade the vast majority of those men and women were in.
