Distributor should it be advanced or retard......When you turn the distributor to advance the timing, the engine speeds up, and if you retard the timing the engine rpm's will slow down.

Here's the thing. It's no longer acceptable to refer to a person as "retarded" in any formal or clinical way, because of its use as a derogatory colloquialism. The slang usage completely drove out the correct usage. Therefore, I no longer see the slang usage as derogatory toward those who are now called "mentally challenged" or whatever it may be; it's been severed from those actual people with actual developmental problems. If one uses it directly against a person with a handicap, that's different.
It's not a word I commonly use anyway, but I don't see it as really analogous to the n-word.
And what do you mean when you say, "that sweater is retarded looking"? Please explain how that is not negative. If it's negative, you're making fun of retarded people, b/c there is no way a sweater can be mentally disabled, or late, or any other of the real meanings of "retarded".
It's the same with "that's so gay" that was popular among teens, oh, 10 years ago or so. (Don't know if it still is, my kids are thankfully out of teenhood.)
Words change, meanings change, words go through evolution.
Look at the word "gay", it has changed, it means homosexual now, it meant happy before, it still means both, it is also used to describe something.
"Retarded" in describing the sweater obviously does not mean it is disabled, thus the word has a new meaning, just as calling someone "gay" 100 years ago did not mean the person was a homosexual.
Only the professional victim/always offended crowd seeks out these issues. If it is not retarded or gay today, it will be something else tomorrow.

Just showing the "WORD" is used in varies ways.......by the way I have a sister who is mentally disabled (IS this PC enough for you) she wouldn't know what the word meant if you screamed it at her. She could careless what people say and for the most part she's never experienced name calling.

How about this: Don't use hurtful words when there alternatives. The only people using "retarded" anymore are 12 year old boys on the playground.
Somehow protecting the hateful speech of playground bullies is more important than common decency in your world.
The word retarded puts a label on a broad range of disabilities in people with an even broader range of abilities--you can have a lower than average IQ and function just fine in life (work, marry, support your family) or you can be profoundly disabled, unable to function independently in any way, and need extensive care. The label isn't fair because the factors involved for each person are so different. Kids with autism with incredibly high IQs used to be labeled as retarded because they couldn't interact or communicate what they were thinking. The same is true with kids with apraxia of speech (a motor planning disorder where IQ is completely normal, but speech is completely garbled without years speech therapy as a young child to retrain the brain to make the appropriate sounds consistently). Retarded really is a bad label, and a person with disabilities is much more accurate. Being a veteran has nothing to do with your innate abilities, and it's not variable depending on the person--it's designation that's absolutely accurate for every single person who's served in the armed forces.

The person was saying the word "handicap" is wrong because it is a label, and people should not be labeled as it is wrong. A coworker brought up the label of veteran, the person refused to comment on this and deflected the conversation.

The PC word is "SPECIAL" It sounds better to say a retarded person is "special" everyone likes that word..
My mom use to tell us this about my sister and while growing up we wondered why she was "special" and we weren't ......come to find out she is "special" at least to us.
