Basically. I remember a redneck kid beating up a nerdy kid on the bus 2x a week when I was in high school. They were both white. Um. It isn't news, kids get bullied every day in the US.
This wasn't bullying. It also wasn't racial. Let me repeat the narrative again.
Kid tells school official one of the kids in the group tried selling him drugs. Punks beat him up
A. Cuz he told on them
B. To steal his wallet
C. Both
I say C. We'll see as more info comes in.
The question for me is::
How did the punks find out the victim told on one of them earlier on?

One of my good friends was nerdy in school and got beat up a lot(all white on white), he eventually quit and went on to get his GED went to college and is really successful now.
I think what happened was the kid told the principal and the principal contacted the troublemakers (all in the same day). The thugs probably assumed it was the kid that snitched on him.

Persons willing to risk selling drugs on the street or in the open tend not to be the most stable people.
When I was younger I got asked all the time, I even got asked by what appeared to be an early teen boy a few years ago in my old neighborhood, which wasn't too bright considering he had no idea who I was.
If you are going to report everyone that asks if you want any drugs you are going to be spending a lot of time at the police station.

In the ghetto it's called snitching...and the punishment is usually a beating.
Kids should be able to tell about drug activity but officials have to make it safe and discreet.
You can't possibly think the school officials don't know who is selling drugs on the school grounds or near by. It would require a sting operation and since it is small fish nothing would be done.
Person A saying person B wanted to sell them drugs is USELESS in court.

Could be. Who knows?
Officials have to be careful so kids who turn in drug pushers don't get implicated. And if the kid was sloppy in relaying the info I hope he improves his street smarts.
And please nobody get on me for that last one. Of course the kid didn't deserve the beating. It's just the way of the culture. It's called "snitches get stitches". Improved street smarts are going to keep him safe.
Another issue...
The bus driver complied with policy. Still, he didn't check on the kid afterwards. He says he was scared to death and has been having nightmares. Maybe a move to deflect criticism? I don't know.
