NJ governor to sign ban on gay conversion therapy

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Gov. Chris Christie plans to sign a bill Monday barring licensed therapists from trying to turn gay teenagers straight, making New Jersey the second state to ban so-called conversion therapy, along with California.

The bill passed both houses of the New Jersey Legislature with bipartisan support in June. Assemblyman Tim Eustace, who sponsored the bill and is openly gay, described the therapy as "an insidious form of child abuse."

Bravo to him, though of course you have to wonder how much he's doing this to position himself for 2016. Get his moderate creds established now before he has to tack Tea Party right for the primaries.

Good. It is a horrifying practice that has ruined and destroyed (sometimes literally) many innocent people's lives.

Yeppers. It remains to be seen what his platform is in 2016.

Yes, this is the first thing I thought of as well, but it's a good law regardless. If anything, it's going to make it more difficult for him to survive the Republican primaries should he decide to run.

Yeah, that will be a tricky tap dance for him, for sure. Fun to watch. Maybe he can be the first to succeed at it, who knows?

I'm just curious........how many people that practice this are licensed therapists? Do we have a problem with licensed therapists doing this?

Yes, because a person is born gay.

The question was not whether it's a problem for licensed therapists to do this. I am asking if we actually have a problem with licensed therapists doing this.

Are those who do this licensed therapists?

These therapists prey on children and their ignorant parents.

Note the law is geared toward banning it for kids, not adults. Adults can visit shamans, priests, witch doctors, quacks and hypnotists to their heart's content to vanquish "the gay."

Even then: Conversion therapy (or reparative therapy and sometimes known as reorientation therapy) works under the assumption that sexual orientation is a choice; that loving the same sex is simply a state of mind that is generated from past traumas.

That’s not a view shared by responsible mental health organizations.
