I am conservative on many issues and liberal on others, but I am tired of hearing this crap. It means absolutely nothing. It means about as much as a sign that says worlds best Pizza. Its just crap and it gets repeated so much it means even less than that.
It means that in America, we live in a country where if you do exceptional work, it is rewarded, even if you started out dirt poor as a child. In other countries, you are born into a class and no matter how exceptional you are in deeds and ideas and talent, you will never amount to anything more then what you started out as.
Exceptionalism means we are a country and a society of people, where the exceptional people rise to the top, and with each person's rise they lift the rest of the country with them just a little more.
When someone creates the light bulb, or the cell phone, or other ideas, products and services that benefit the rest of us, it makes the country grow, and the people with it.
Want to live in a country where the people do not know what exceptionalism is, then you might be be in a country with an oppressive central government which confiscates over half the people's wealth, and the bureaucrats decide for the unwashed masses, or an oppressive socialist country like China, where government comes first, and the people live with equality of misery for all, or one ruled by a despotic dictatorship or Mullah or monarchy, or pick your poison.
Once more for the block heads among us, The WW2 generation is called the greatest generation. That in and of itself is another relative term that means nothing. Those in the south during the Civil war saw much worse and sacrificed more, the point is that the US did not win WW2. It did not fight in it as long and did not sacrifice as much as even the Czechs did. [a relatively small country at the time] The USSR another country that does not exist any longer lost 50 times the people we did fighting the Germans. If not for the USSR the US and Britain the rest of the allies would never have been able to win. So why is the USSR not the greatest? Because its not a thing that can be judged, Its not about winning a war, not about being free, the English are free, they do what they want when they want and work and live in a capitalist system. You have no idea what your rant about being excptional even means or how it would be judged, you say it and that makes it so. Well bob, it aint so.
Losing 50 times more people is not an achievement. It's not something to be proud of.
It's a phrase that doesn't need to be said. We have a remote controlled vehicle on Mars, a flag on the moon, the only man made object to leave the solar system and we kick the crap out of everyone at the Olympics.
We're fat.
We're exhausted.
Our middle class, the only thing that truly made us exceptional, is a generation or two from complete extinction.
We're angry. Always angry.
We're violent. Or afraid.
We're ignorant.
We're poorly educated.
We lack innovation.
We're hated.
We're not exceptional in any positive way beyond our military might and 1-percenter income levels.
That's about the size of it. We wage war, that's what we do best.
Didn't Obama say something like "just words, just speeches"? He gloms onto certain words for effect, "exceptional" and "extraordinary", because he thinks that's what we want to hear.

Sorry, folks, I think America is exceptional. We've come through several foreign invasions, a civil war, two world wars, terrorist attacks, among other things, and we're still alive and kicking. We put more than one American on the moon and put probes on other planets. We can say Obama sucks in public without fear of government reprisals, we can "fire" our representatives and the President by our votes. Yes, this country is exceptional, and has been since it's inception.
And, by the way, who the hell is this guy, president of one of the most corrupt governments in the world, to tell the US how to live. **** him.

but I can agree that evil empire WAS EXCEPTIONAL - on it's evil.
that's why they lost so much people - because people did not matter there.

That was a counter to someone surmising exceptionalism came from winning WWII. Many countries won WWII so I guess even the ones that don't exist today are then still exceptional, right?
Now shall we talk about most countries fielding an ALL VOLUNTEER force. Would that be exceptional or something to brag about?
The ego is so big by our leaders, they think they can bomb anyone for what they call is good reason... sick of the bragging about our military might.. Russia has nukes too and many other countries.. we can be blown off the map too.

no, some of those countries actually signed a pact with the invader and invaded others in September 1939 themselves.
