How have conspiracy theories gotten so huge in the past few years? Is the general distrust of the government reaching a fever pitch and people are just making wild assumptions now? Do people believe these things because they are actually that stupid or they need something to talk about?

Claiming the government did 9/11, Sandy Hook, Obama is a reptilian shape shifter/Muslim, etc. I just don't get it.

Similar to why people believe in god - because people feel better "knowing" that something is in control, rather than there just being chaos.

Default Why are conspiracy theories so popular?

Reality is very hard for some folks to accept. It can terribly upset the hyerpartisans whose personal identity is tightly wrapped around a political viewpoint. Developments proving that viewpoint is flawed cause a predictable psychotic reaction. So they invent silly fantasies that better fit their foggy view of life and the world around them.

Anything the government does not want a citizen to question they deem a conspiracy theory. Similarly GW Bush said that if you don't believe him then you must be a terrorist. The OP uses a similar tactic as he identifies anyone who believes in a so-called conspiracy theory as being stupid.

Isn't interesting how he OP introduces this post mixing believable with the bizarre. BTW, I have yet to hear anything about the incident at Sandy Hook being a conspiracy.

Trolling perhaps???

Some people, including myself at times, feel as if there is a explanation for everything some of which isn't revealed. We can say someone went on a massacre at VA tech for no good reason but there is always a slim possibility that some else conspired the event and that person hasn't been revealed. In regards to 9/11 I feel as if certain information hasn't be released, that doesn't mean that the US govt orchestrated the event but moneyless (*nonetheless, stupid auto-correct) that all we think we know isn't all that's truly available. Maybe other people dwell in conspiracies for other reasons, but this is my reason.

I put a lot of the blame on all of the dumb Hollywood productions that portray the government, the president, the military and almost all civil institutions as just plain evil. It's an ongoing, never-ending theme in movies and TV shows. Personally I detest this kind of "entertainment". It effect more people than just Americans. All of this garbage is exported all over the world and believe it or not, the people who watch this crap form their opinions of the USA by it.

Conspiracy theories give people a sense of understanding to the world around them. Some people have a hard time accepting a complex world, so conspiracy theories give them comfort and a sense of explanation to the world around them.

They would make for good plot devices in a fictional story.

Conspiracy theories allow people to feel special, relevant and clued-in to world events without being such. In other words, they're ego boosters for dimwits.
