I feel bad for the elderly and for the genuinely disabled. Food is expensive these days. Items that used to cost $2-something or $3-something (such as a box of cereal) now cost over $4.00.

Yeah, we are having that shoved down our throats locally right now! "You MUST vote FOR the school bond issue, IT IS FOR THE CHILDREN, and it will only cost $10 per month on a $200K house!"
Yeah, right, added on to the last bond issue, and the last levy increase, and the one before that, and all the others, once a year, every year, since who knows when.
I wonder how difficult it would be for obama and his cronies to re-instate the program? Will they even bother to try, or will they just blame the expiration on the horrible repugnicans?
My bet is that they won't even bother to try!

These 'cuts' are really just putting the eligibility back to what it was before the recession, right?

You state that she is 50 as if she is an old person beyond the usual working years. Is she disabled?

More people are on welfare than ever before. Some because they refuse to work and made it a way of life. Others because they keep having babies with dead beats, then turn around and have more kids. Others because they can't find a job because of Obamas pi*s poor policies.

You should be mad at those who are able bodied and able to work but refuse to work. You should be angry at the people making kids (yep both mommy and daddy) that they can't afford. They are taking the share of the elderly.

We're 'elderly' , my husband is disabled and not on food stamps and we switch brands rather than pay over $4 for a box of cereal.
But I suppose people on food stamps can't do that....must have our Chocolate KoKo Crunch

When the "temporary" payroll tax cuts ended, the masses howled about a tax increase.

When the" temporary" increase in SNAP benefits ended, the masses howl about a reduction in benefits.

What part of " temporary" do the masses fail to comprehend?

There are more people than ever before.

The percentage of the population who receives welfare benefits has been increasing all along.

Most who receive benefits are working poor. Used to be that many low skilled workers could seek employment in factories and make enough to raise a family on the lower rungs of middle class.

Even during the prosperous 50's, 25% of the population lived in dire poverty.

Global competition and technology permanently eliminated serious millions of these jobs.

15% of manufacturing jobs were eliminated between 2000-2010 due to technology.

The real irony is that those states with the highest percentage of poverty tend to vote Republican. The state, not the fed, operate welfare programs including fraud detection and prevention.

Why should the government, better yet, we the taxpayers, be responsible for raising YOUR kids?

Prices depend on the competitiveness of the local food market. I live in a highly competitive food market. Some areas are food deserts, particularly for those without access to a car.
