This is really falling like dominoes state by state. Republicans really need to give up on this. The opposition is merely an exercise in futility at this point and will only alienate voters who approve of same-sex marriage. The holy rollers will still vote GOP due to abortion.

Nonsense. You don't give up on a just fight so easily. This isn't a movement of popular will but one crafted by savvy elites beholdened to no one. This ruling will be swept aside.

Unlike CA, Utah will appeal. States have every right to establish marriage laws they deem fit as sovereign entities. This will end up before SCOTUS once again.

And by the time it does, a majority of Americans will live in states where gay marriage is practiced and legal, and public opinion will have overwhelmingly shifted in favor of allowing gay marriage. It will be Loving v. Virginia again and the SCOTUS will strike down whatever laws are left in the country to the contrary making gay marriage legal everywhere. It's inevitable.

I'm not necessarily saying SCOTUS won't rule in UT's favor. However, if they do, the Republicans will be seen as even more heartless and bigoted by the growing group of Americans who support gay marriage. If they don't, the Republicans will never get the chance to come out as being for it as it becomes more widely accepted (and it WILL).

So the judge refused to stay his decision pending appeal, and the Salt Lake County Clerk immediately began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Gay couples are getting married in Utah as we speak.

Congrats to the first gay couple to wed in Utah:

That's not true. It found that the defendants did not have legal standing to appeal the case to them. Once a state's government decides to defend their marriage ban, they will rule on it.

I sincerely hope that's the case. I would have LOVED to see a ruling on the Prop 8 case.

As a California resident, this is making me smile pretty big. Perhaps the LDS will start spending money on silly stuff like clothing the naked and feeding the hungry, rather than on political campaigns designed to keep the gays firmly in their place?

Wow, cannot believe it happened here before Oregon. And Utah, one of if not the most Republican state(s)..just wow. Like an arrow straight into the Heart of Darkness. Good to see, and I know of at least two couples who will likely take advantage of this very soon.
