When two parties come into court with two difference medical opinions, then the court has to "be involved" in the medical decision. It has to listen to medical testimony from both sides and determine which one is right.
And it's absolutely proper to preserve the status quo pending an appeal as the judge did here.
This is the second extension. What you are describing happened the first time. Also the judge has declared the child brain dead biased on the the opinion of an outside medical professional appointed by the court. There is no other medical opinion to be had. 3 doctors have declared her brain dead.

Don't get me wrong - I agree with the Judge's ruling and the medical consensus here. This kid is dead and should be taken off the machine unless the family wants to pay for if out of pocket in a hospital willing to give them a bed.
That said, the family is absolutely entitled to appeal the ruling, and in light of that the Judge staying his order is correct.
It is hard for anyone to give up hope especially for children. Don't we all pray for miracles when someone we love life is on the line. I can understand even though I know better.

They should have filed any appeal before the last ruling expired. This has been going on too long. Soon her brain will liquefy then what?
what about the families wishes? Medical staff at one hospital overrides their wishes? That's what this is about, the court giving the parents time to file legal papers.
She's dead.

The court did the absolute wrong thing here. It should have stepped in and told a family in serious denial that it was time to pull the plug. Instead, it ruled that a better idea was to enable their denial and continue to ventilate a corpse. This is why medical professionals should make the medical judgments. If the family wants to buy a ventilator, take her home and provide her with 24 hour care then go ahead, but the hospital should not be forced to expend resources on a dead body.

I feel bad for them. A simple procedure that had an unexpected turn out. They should let her rest by mid-January.
