I'm waiting for someone to say, well, he was jaywalking blah blah blah.

His sons sound pretty savvy, so I'm sure something will come of this. Just not sure what !

I like what another poster said in another thread. Something about "lust for punishment"...

The community put pressure on the police to prevent jay walking that caused 3 pedestrian fatalities in the past month. The police responded by targeting jay walkers and writing tickets to offenders.

Sounds like Mr. Wong did not understand English and resisted and pushed a cop.

Yeah, it's an overreaction. So is the reaction when pedestrians jay walk and are killed by cars and the community demands the police do something about it. (sigh)

This is why we need to Push for English as the official language and require immigrants to learn it.

I've commented on police brutality in many threads but this one isn't so clear. There are many things to comment on.

‘As soon as he pushed the cop, it was like cops started running in from everywhere.’

First you can't do this when you were the one in the wrong in the first place. This isn't like the stop and frisk policies where people are stopped for no reason. The officer had a valid reason to stop him. There are good reasons for these laws especially in a place like NYC.

It also shows why if you are going to live here you should have to learn the language.

So, I'm open to hear what the police should have done here. We have someone that clearly broke the law. The officer was going to write him a ticket but he fought against that and pushed the officer away. Is that a legitimate acceptable reaction to breaking a law? Is it something everyone should just be allowed to get away with?

Yes, especially since everyone in NYC jaywalks. I always loved that about NYC--lots of anarchy pedestrian-wise. Not at all like LA where they hand out tickets for it. Since a few pedestrians have been killed on the upper Westside, they must be cracking down and overreacting.

Looks like they are learning a little more self control. Wasn't that long ago they shot a guy (and also hit bystanders) for it.

No, he was not left beaten and bloody for jaywalking.

He was beaten and bloodied for pushing the cops, and then struggling with them. That after he tried to walk away as the cop was writing him up for jaywalking.

Yes, it was an overreaction. And they say he appeared not to under stand the cop's English instructions.

If I were in a country where I didn't understand the language (like, say, Korea) and a cop grabbed me, started talking to me, and started writing in his little book, I would still understand enough to know I shouldn't turn my back on him and walk away, but should stand there and pay attention. Even if I'm sure I did nothing wrong, you don't just turn and walk away.

This guy didn't know that? I'd imagine he did know that, and was just being a jerk to the cop.

Yes, the cops overreacted. They were reacting to several recent fatailities at that street corner, as instructed, and were trying to SAVE lives by giving jaywalkers little wrist-slaps (in the form of jaywalking tickets) to people who did things (like jaywalking) that might get them killed.

Maybe it was all an accident.

Unlike your deliberate omission of details on what happened, in an attempt to vilify the cops and pretend they were crazed maniacs beating up everyone they could find. Your scurrilous attempt (the nicest thing we could call it, is an "overreaction") was no accident.
