College for those with the aptitude and trade schools for those who aren't suited for college should be a priority. That said who will pay for it? Do we raise taxes some more or do we make meaningful cuts? I vote meaningful cuts. Cutting aide to countries who hate us along with Israel would pay for a lot of education. Learn to mind our own business and stop nation building would pay for a lot also.
Maybe if we stopped poking our nose into everyone else's internal affairs we could down size our military and save some money there as well.

He seems very concerned with making sure these 18 year olds get money to go to college.
I'm sure he's been made aware that barely 30% graduate from a 2 year college and barely 50% graduate from a 4 year college yet he voices little concern over that.

Personally, I do not know how one can be over-educated. I have always assumed the more education and knowledge the better. More educated people can only be good for society. Apparently, there is a movement afoot promoting ignorance, and I suspect there are more than a few tea party leaders behind it. Keep the population less educated and they are easier to control.

As far as Obama, he promoted trade jobs and apprenticeships in the SOTU, as well. Regarding college he is only saying, because he himself believes in education, that everyone who wants to go to college and have that kind of education should have the opportunity do so. It should not only be reserved for the wealthy and people on sports scholarships.

Why should the government pay for college? That's a big part of the problem.

Because liberals push for more education. It all started with LBJ in the 60's. Since then, it has become a "right" for middle class and working class Americans to send their children to college. I am not saying if it is for indoctrination or not, (that is a total whacked out right wing ideal if you ask me) but they go by the stats that going to college helps rather than hurts. On the average it has to this point but Millennials and even some late GenX are shackled down and drowning in debt. Lyndon Johnson on Education

To keep up with the rest of the world we need to return to producing the best, most well educated people on the planet. We should invest in the future. I would limit it to Medical Doctors, engineers, and possibly business majors.
We can't compete if we don't invest.
I think trade schools should begin in the 11th grade.

We don't need government funding to accomplish this. Smart students are funded by endowments and scholarships and a receive good education.

Government funding has created a group of undereducated college graduates. We had less than 50 high quality universities prior to government funding. Now that government is involved in funding, we still have less than 50 high quality universities and thousands of low quality universities. That's not a good investment. Perhaps if the funding was used to create more high quality schools... but that hasn't happened.

Maybe over-educated is a kinda tricky term to define????

But under-skilled.........lots of those. Go to college and run-up tons of debt.....and with that degree, you don't have any skills that will equate to a good salary in the REAL world.

Wow, a degree in Cultural Studies.....hum??????

Mostly because human development pays off 10 fold in terms of higher earnings and thus higher amounts of taxes paid. It's good public policy.
