what did romney do that was illegal?
Probably a reference to the fact that many believe he didn't release his earlier tax returns because its believed they would show he took advantage of a tax amnesty for the prior years.

Theres some pretty strong circumstantial evidence this is true, but nothing proved. The unwillingness to release from a man whose father was a open proponent of releasing more then a couple years because a couple years could be massaged was damning in many peoples eyes.

I never said he did anything illegal.
Tacky and unpatriotic, yes, but not illegal.

So you need to overpay your taxes to be a good citizen, comrade?

Sigh.

No but maybe...just MAYBE you shouldn't put so much effort into not paying your share, and exploiting every loophole you can find. And maybe....just MAYBE if you do those things, you should also publicly say "yes I paid the least I could, but im going to do my best to make the extremes I took it to illegal"

Why must a legal behavior be declared illegal? And how is paying that which the law requires you to pay "not paying your share?"

Romney complied with the law. The law dictated what was his fair share. He paid it, thus fair share paid.

Just don't understand why complying with the law, right down to the letter, is a bad thing?

Sigh. If you have to ask these things you are failing as a human being and a member of a society.

1. doing whats legal isnt always ethical. Just because you can doesnt mean you should.
2. We dont know if Romney did or not, theres a lot of circumstantial evidence that he did not in the past.
3. We should eliminate loopholes that are used to avoid taxes. Its not fair or right to exploit a loophole in ways that are just to reduce your taxes-because those taxes have to be made up by others.
4. and his fair share was what? 14%? Really? you're mixing what the law is vs's whats fair. He abused the specifics of the law in ways to unfairly benefit. Dont confuse fair and law. While the laws on taxes are designed to be fair, there are ways to abuse them. Look at his 401K for example.

We all try to avoid as much tax as possible and take advantage of every loophole possible.

This is not just for the super rich. They just have better accountants.

I wonder if Warrant Buffet takes tax breaks.

Congratulations, so does everyone else. Thats not what we are describing. But you probably know that.

We're talking about a 21-100 million dollar IRA account from a system that is supposed to be maxed out at 30K/yr in contributions.

The Secret Behind Romney

Things like that.
