Going back to give a hat tip to a Goldwater acts as a kind of salve to these internal conflicted feelings. Since Goldwater is off the scene, and no longer a political threat, it's ok to give him credit. He's not going to propose a tax cut, eliminate a federal agency, etc.

I wish I had more of a psychology background; maybe there is someone out there who does, and can expand/expound upon this.
That's definitely part of it. What they want to do is paint the current GOP as "socially extreme" compared to the past which is ridiculous considering how stuff like gay marriage and mass illegal immigration weren't even really under serious discussion by anyone 25 years ago.

To do this they need examples of past "moderate" GOP heroes, preferably dead so that they can't defend themselves from highly selective quotes and historical context. It's all about continuing the endless, society-rending culture war.

"Barry Goldwater warned about the Religious Right taking over the Republican party"

So what. You guys destroyed him anyway, or tried to. He was going to get us deeply involved in the Vietnam War, ironic since that's exactly what Johnson did. Goldwater actually wanted us to either leave or win it by not ***** footing around. Thousands of lives would have been spared if he had won, but oh no, he was to radical.

If Barry Goldwater were around today, Democrats would be attacking him as extremist, racist, and all the other usual memes.

Goldwater would be the only one who is pro-choice.

Liberals siding with Barry Goldwater?

Why weren't you doing this 50 years ago?

One of my favorite quotes by Barry Goldwater about gays in the military:

"You don't have to be straight to be in the military, you just have to shoot straight."
